SUMMARY OF THE SPORTS COMPONENTS
•
We have already seen that the sports industry is complex,
with many components combining to form this unique
industry. We have identified ten components of the sports
industry (can you name these?) but there are many
others.
• Not only are there a range of goods and services
provided by the commercial sector, but the non-government
agencies (local authority, government bodies,
voluntary organisations, leisure trusts) also play an
important, if under-documented, role.
• Now we need to gain an understanding of how these
various components are linked and the complexities of
such relationships.

TYPES OF INTERRELATIONSHIP
Directly linked operations
• In which the two components are
linked but one benefits more than
the other, e.g. sports retail and
sports spectating.
• For example, it has been estimated that
the UK market size for sports goods has
grown by 21.3% since 1999 to
£4,320million (£6,860 million) in 2002
(Mintel, Sports Goods Retailing, 2004).
This increase cannot be attributed to
increased participation in sport as, for
example, only a third of football-kit sales
are of items worn for participation. There
is a direct link between sport retail and
sport spectating, in particular the
dramatic growth within sport retailing in
the sales of replica football kit, both
for wearing replica shirts as leisurewear
and sport spectating. This is a complex
relationship, with leading clubs and
manufacturers aggressively marketing
their regularly updated ranges to the
sport spectator. The market is now worth
more than £200 million a year.

TYPES OF INTERRELATIONSHIPS
Symbiotic interrelationships
• Where both components are
dependent on each other to survive,
e.g. professional sport and sports
medicine.
• For example sport medicine and
professional sport. Sports medicine and
professional sport rely on each other. The
link is a symbiotic one. The sports
medics work to improve the fitness
and physiological status of the athlete
by application of sound scientific
principles. For professional teams, the
athletes are their most prized assets
and the sports medic is essential in
the diagnosis and treatment of those with
injuries and in improving fitness levels
with innovative and safe fitness
programmes.

TYPES OF INTERRELATIONSHIPS
Symbiotic interrelationships
• Where both components are
dependent on each other to survive,
e.g. professional sport and satellite
broadcasting.
• For example sport broadcasting and
professional sport. Sports broadcasting
and professional sport rely on each other.
The link is a symbiotic one. The sports
broadcasters would not have jobs if
there was no professional sports. Multi
million pound companies like SKY would
not exist if there was no professional
sport. Not just TV but newspapers,
magazines and subscriptions, radio would
not survive if professional sport was not
played.
