New Journal Grading Rubric
Minimum Requirements outlined
Journals will be graded on campus and the top ones will be
submitted for entry in the Journal category
 EACH Campus must grade all journals and submit a verification form
for the team if the journal grade is “70” or above

Requirement of teacher volunteers (one per campus) to help grade
journal entries.
Diary / Testing 50%
Design 20%
Research 20%
Cost Record 10%

43-50 points The minimum number
of entries (12 for the top score) must
be legible and properly written in
complete sentences. Each entry may
be handwritten or typed and should
be a paragraph in length.(3- 5
sentences) The minimum number of
photos (8 for the top score) must be
8 different photos showing some
type of action with the vehicle.
Examples of this would be building,
wiring, soldering, practicing, etc. The
point is that there should not be still
shots of the vehicle. The photos
should all be action shots. Each entry
and photo should have a date.
Students may have more than the
minimum requirements, but the
same rules apply to extra entries
18-20 points
A minimum of 5
drawings (for the top
score).
Each drawing
should be hand
drawn neatly on
graph paper, drawn
to scale and labeled
accordingly.
The drawings should
show a logical
progression from the
beginning of your
design to the end.
The final drawing
should be a group
sketch showing the
final design. This
drawing should be
drawn to scale and
labeled accordingly.
Students may have
more than 5 drawings,
only five drawings
must be on graph
paper.

robotics, autonomous,
humanoid and android. This
information must be
presented in paragraph form
in your own words giving
examples to explain each of
the terms. You may quote a
source using proper
notation, but cannot “cut and
paste” anything.

proper sentence structure
and be a page long if hand written.

 Tabs must be in proper book order in a binder. (do not use composition
notebooks, they will not be graded)
 Must have tabbed dividers separating each section – MUST BE NEAT

 Each entry must have a cost record, with receipts, not exceeding $100.00,
reviewed and signed by the sponsor teacher.
 The sponsor page has been eliminated.

Each entry should be written in complete concise statements using proper sentence structure and be a page long if hand
written and at least ¾ of a page if typed. Handwritten entries must be legible. Students may have more than the minimum
requirements, but the above guidelines must be followed.
Each team must turn in either a verification sheet or a journal to be
turned in as the teams check in.
If a journal is entered and then your team decides not to enter the
Journal Competition, then your team is expected to have a signed
verification form at check in.
If your team does not have a verification forms or journal entered
you will be disqualified per the qualifying competition rules in the
official rules of the Engineering Design Competition.

Make sure to get this type of toggle switch…
There a just a couple things that have changed…
Do not use a pentiometer, use a rheostat
“Larry’s Hobbies” has closed, use R.C. Hobby instead.
Make sure to buy your materials as early as possible, because they run
out of materials quickly.
