Datum points
● Datum points are used to
transfer levels on
construction jobs.
● Site datums give a
reference point on site
for all levels. The site
datum will be set in
relation to an Ordnance
Survey Bench Mark
(OSBM).

Substructures
● The substructure receives the load from the building and transfers it to
the ground. The main part of the substructure is the foundation.
● The entire area must be surveyed to select the correct type of
foundation.
● The wrong type could lead to the building collapsing.

Damp proof course
● Damp proof course is used to prevent damp from getting into a building.
● Slate can be used as DPC.
● Damp proof membrane is used as a waterproof barrier over larger
areas, like floors.

Floors
● Suspended timber floor – timber
joists span the floor. It is decked by
wooden material. Air bricks are fitted
beneath to prevent timber rot.
● Solid concrete floor – very durable,
with its depth set by the Building
Regulations.
● Floating floor – timber construction
on a concrete floor with decking on
timbers.
