Momentum
Momentum is mass in motion. Momentum
depends on mass and velocity.
The formula for calculating momentum is
๐‘ = ๐‘š๐‘ฃ
where p = momentum, m = mass, and
v = velocity.
Momentum
The unit for momentum is Newton second (Ns).
The unit for mass is kilogram (kg), and unit for
velocity is meters per second (m/s).
Momentum has direction and magnitude so it is
a vector quantity.
Impulse
An impulse is a force exerted over a period of time. The
formula for Impulse is
๐ผ = ๐นโˆ†๐‘ก
Where I = impulse, F = force , and ฮ”t = change in time
(final t โ€“ initial t)
The Unit for Impulse is Newton second or kilogram meter
per second (kg·m/s),
Force is Newtons (N), and time is measured in seconds
(s).

Impulse and Momentum
To stop an object, you apply a force against its
motion for a given period of time. The impulsemomentum theorem states that
Impulse = change in momentum.
As a result of this another formula for Impulse is
๐ผ = ๐‘šโˆ†๐‘ฃ
Where I = impulse, m = mass and
โˆ†v = change in velocity (final v โ€“ initial v)
Why wear a hard hat?
Hard hats and bumpers increase the time of
collision, thereby decreasing the force
experienced by the object being protected.

Conservation of Momentum
The Law of Conservation of Momentum states
that momentum remains the same in a system,
unless there is an external force.
Momentum can be transferred from one object
to another in a collision.

Elastic Collisions
โ€ข Objects bounce off each other
Inelastic Collisions
โ€ข Objects stick together
