Every year the United States celebrates Arbor
Day, a national holiday that began in Nebraska.
The holiday's founder is Julius Sterling Morton.
All his life Morton grew trees and asked others
to grow trees. He proposed to set one day each
year for tree planting. People liked his idea.
On the first celebration of Arbor Day, in 1872,
people planted more than a million trees in
Nebraska. Arbor Day become a legal holiday in
Nebraska on April 22, 1885, Morton's birthday.
In different countries, Arbor Day is celebrated
on different dates. It depends on the best time
for planting trees.
