Abstract
• This document is to propose a MAC mechanism to support
dynamic channel transfer procedure (DCT) for 802.11aj (60GHz)
• This contribution has been discussed in CWPAN group

Background
• Proposed Channelization for 60GHz bands for 802.11aj
– There are 6 logical channels: 2 bands with 2.16GHz bandwidth (Channel 2 & 3),
4 bands with 1.08GHz bandwidth (Channel 5, 6, 7, 8);
– This proposed channelization Supports more than 3 logical channels for 802.11aj
and keeps the backward compatibility with 802.11ad device;
Channelization for 60GHz bands in China

Dynamic Channel Transfer(DCT) procedure for IEEE
802.11aj(60GHz) (1/2)
Some cases (Case 1 to Case 3): Request an existing PCP/AP to another vacant
channel to allow other IEEE 802.11aj PCP/AP to establish a new BSS.
•
•
Case 1 (Channel 6, 8 are occupied by existing BSS-1 and
BSS-2 at 1.08GHz)
• New STA (to become PCP/AP-3) wants to start a new
BSS-3 at 2.16GHz
• PCP/AP-3 request BSS-1 on channel 6 to move to
channel 7, or request BSS-2 on channel 8 to move to
channel 5
• PCP/AP-1 or PCP/AP-2 shall assess the request against
its capabilities and the impact on its BSS’s performance
• PCP/AP-1 or PCP/AP-2 may refuse the request
• If the request is confirmed, PCP/AP-3 may has a chance
to use channel 2 or channel 3
Case 2 / 3 are similar to Case 1

Dynamic Channel Transfer(DCT) procedure for IEEE
802.11aj(60GHz) (2/2)
•
Public action frame in 802.11spec
– Inter-BSS and AP to unassociated-STA communications
– Intra-BSS communication and so on
•
–
Proposed new public action frame for the DCT procedure:
DCT Measurement Request frame
 Requesting one or more STAs in the DCT responder PCP/AP’s BSS(PBSS or
Infrastructure BSS)to measure a specified channel or all other channels within
supported operating class.
–
DCT Measurement Report frame
 Transmitting from the DCT responder PCP/AP to the DCT requester PCP/AP to
report the result of channel measurement or refuse the DCT request.
–
DCT Request frame
 Requesting DCT responder PCP/AP’s BSS to move to an available channel reported
in the DCT Measurement Report frame.
–
DCT Response frame
 Transmitting from the DCT responder PCP/AP to the DCT requester PCP/AP to
confirm or refuse the DCT request.

Conclusion
• This presentation propose a mechanism referred to as Dynamic
Channel Transfer .It can improve the network flexibility and channel
efficiency for 802.11aj(60GHz), if the existing idle channel could not
satisfy the networking requirements for the 802.11aj STA (to become
PCP/AP).
