Solar Thermal Sector
 Yearly Average Solar Flow of 2200 kWh/m2.
 Temperate Climate in Lebanon.
 Target of 12% in Renewable Energies of the total Energy
Mix to be reached by 2020.

Solar Thermal Sector
 Major Initiatives :
o Initiative 1: “The Country Program of Lebanon under the Global Solar
Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative”
in collaboration with UNDP aiming to reach an annual sale of 50 000
m2 of collector area by 2014, and a total installed area of 1 Million m2
by 2020.

Solar Thermal Sector
 Major Initiatives :
o Initiative 2: “The National Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Action” for Solar Water Heating-(NEERA). NEERA is a financing
mechanism initiated by the Central Bank of Lebanon in collaboration
with UNDP, the Ministry of Energy and Water, and LCEC.
Since 2010 NEERA offers loans to Individuals wishing to install SWH
with 0% interest rate, and up to 5 years of monthly payments period.
In addition the MEW offers 200 USD for the first 7500 Installations.

 Major Initiatives :
o Initiative 3: CEDRO , the Country Energy Efficiency and Renewable
Energy Demonstration Project for the Recovery of Lebanon , initiated
by UNDP.

Solar PV Sector
 Total installed capacity does not exceed 700 kWp.
 Main Initiatives and Incentives to simulate the
market aiming to reach 200 MWp by 2020:
o Initiative 1: Here again the NEERA financing mechanism for small and
medium size projects, is helping to fill the gap by offering loans with a
low interest rate (not exceeding 1.5%)and up to 10 years of monthly
payments period.
o Initiative 2: The Net Metering launched in 2011 which solves partially
the problem of the Energy Storage.

Solar PV Sector
 Main Initiatives and Incentives to simulate the
market aiming to reach 200 MWp by 2020:
o Initiative 3: The launching of Public Bids for more than 3000 Solar
Street Led Lighting.
o Initiative 4: The launching of a Public Bid to build 1 MWp over the
Beirut River won by a group of Lebanese Companies. Additional PV
Bids for up to 10 MWp over the Beirut River are foreseen.
o Initiative 5: The launching in September 2014 of a public Bid for 1
MWp in the Zahrani Oil Installations, to be extended to 3 MWp.

Awareness
 The lack of Awareness is a major barrier hindering the
widespread of Renewable Energies.
 LSES in collaboration with the Industrial Research Institute
of Lebanon (IRI) developed the Ecotruck targeting mainly
the youth.

17
Awareness
 The Ecotruck is the first Renewable Energy educational
vehicle in the Middle East aiming at providing learning
material and illustrative tools as well as demo products to
educate students in private and public schools on the
different uses and applications of the Renewable Energies.

Awareness
 In 2013, the Ecotruck has been awarded the Ford Motor
Company Conservation and Environmental Grant of
10.000$.
 Ecotruck could be exported to Arab Countries through their
respective Renewable Energy Associations or Societies.
 LSES will be glad to establish a collaboration to implement
such an educational tool.
