What is it?
• Made up of the digestive tract
• Helps the body breaks down and absorb
food
• 3 Functions:
– Digestion
– Absorption
– Elimination
Teeth
• To chew food
• Used to pronounce words better
• To have a pleasant appearance
Tongue
• Used to taste food
• Helps you speak better
• Principally in chewing, swallowing, and
speaking
Epiglottis
• Allows air to pass through the larynx
• Prevents food and drinks from entering the
wind pipe
Esophagus
• The tube that connects the throat with the
stomach
• About 10 inches long in an adult
• The muscular walls contract to push food
down to the stomach
Small Intestine

Finishes the process of digestion
Absorbs the nutrients
Passes the residue onto the large intestine
Divided into the duodenum, jejunum, and
ileum
Stomach
• Digests food with stomach acid and other
digestive juices
• Absorbs alcohol
• 12 inches long
• Made out of 5 layers
Large Intestine
• Transports waste out of the body
• Tries to take the water in before the
wastes leaves the body
• Connected to the smaller intestine
Liver
• The largest gland in the
human body
• Has 3 roles:
– Vascular functions
– Metabolic achievements
– Secretory and excretory
functions

• Elongated, tapered organ
• Located across the back of the
abdomen
• 2 types of tissue:
– endocrine tissue
– exocrine tissue

Anus
• External opening of the
rectum
• Feces are expelled from the
body through the anus during
the act of defecation
• The anus plays a role in
sexuality, though attitudes
towards anal sex vary and it is
even illegal in some countries
How much food can the average
stomach hold?
• The largest volume a human body can
hold is 6 quarts
• It can expand up to 50 times it’s normal
size
What are villi and what is their
function?
• They are hair-like
protrusions in the
intestines
• They capture nutrients
from the food
• Slow down the passage
of food
