Continuity and Change Over Time Essay
(CCOT)
What is it?
• The second of the three Free-Response-Questions
on the AP Exam (although you do not have to do it
2nd)
• An essay discussing characteristics that changed
and stayed the same in a given region between
two time periods.
– Comparison essay, but across time rather than region.
What is it?
• The CCOT essays asks you to analyze the changes
and continuities that take place over a certain time
period
– Will focus on specific global theme (trade, migration,
technology, culture, environment, etc…)
– Often allow you some choice (two countries, religions,
etc…)
Change vs. Continuity
• Changes are things that are different during a
certain period of time
– During your lifetime, what are some changes?
• House? Friends? Schools? Height? Musical tastes?
• Continuities are things that are happening (or stay
the same) during a certain period of time
– During your lifetime, what are some continuities?
• House? Parents? Hair Color? Siblings?
– Must be present at the beginning of a designated time
period and still there at the end.

Examples???
• So what does a CCOT prompt sound like???
• 2009 –
– Analyze continuities and changes in patterns of
interactions along the Silk Roads from 200 B.C.E. to
1450 B.C.E.
• 2010 –

Latin America/Caribbean
Breaking Down the Prompt
• Includes three parts you must understand to
respond to the prompt correctly:
1. Topic – what is it about?
a. Patterns of Interaction; Religious Beliefs
2. Location – where am I looking for changes/cont.?
a. Along the Silk Road; choice of Sub-Saharan Africa OR
Latin America/Carribbean
3. Timeframe – which years (periods) do I focus on?
a. 200 B.C.E. to 1450 C.E.; 1450 C.E. to the present
Writing the CCOT Essay
• Just like with the Comparison Essay, the most
important piece of the CCOT is to develop a strong
thesis
– Remember – this provides you with a roadmap to follow
• Your thesis MUST restate all the information in the
prompt (can rephrase it instead of using exact
language)
Writing the CCOT Essay
• For example:
 Analyze the social and physical changes and
continuities that have taken place in your life from
1998 – the present.
• Your basic thesis structure should follow this
format:
 In my life from the time of my birth (1998) until
now,
changed from
to
and
changed from
to
,
while
stayed the same.
General Thesis Statement Tips
• Be sure to restate the prompt
• Can be more than one sentence – let the reader
know what you’re going to write about
• Follow the “Rule of Three”
– Two changes and one continuity
– Two continuities and one change
Example: The Computer
• Analyze the changes and continuities in the design
and functions of the personal computer from 1975 to
2012.
• Must have the basic background knowledge to
complete this (which is what we’re learning all year)
Example: The Computer
• Create a CCOT timeline BEFORE writing your thesis

functions of the personal computer from 1975 to 2012.
Thesis Examples:
• Very Poor

same over the past 37 years.
• Poor

typing have been replaced by internet-based
programs. During this time many of the basic
features such as word processing have stayed the
same.
Analyze the changes and continuities in the design and
functions of the personal computer from 1975 to 2012.
Thesis Examples:
• Very Good (what we’re shooting for):
- During the development of the personal computer
from 1975 to 2012, the world has seen the PC
change from large, bulky machines into sleek,
compressed tablets with much more functionality
and programming, including the introduction of
faster processing and the internet. While a lot has
changed, many of the basic designs and functions
such as the ability to store and display information
as well as word processing have always been key
features.
Assignment
• Using the CCOT thesis development model, write a
complete thesis statement that answers the
following prompt:
