FETAL PIG DESIGN:
ANATOMY
There are two basic kinds of “cutting.”
Sharp dissection – cutting with a scalpel or
scissors.
• What are the advantages and disadvantages?
• When should we use sharp dissection?
Blunt dissection – separating tissues with a
blunt probe, scalpel handle, or fingers.
• What are the advantages and disadvantages?
• When should we use blunt dissection?
There are two anatomical
approaches to dissection
• Regional anatomy – dissection to study
the “regions” of the body – head and neck,
thorax, abdominal cavity, legs, etc.
• Systemic anatomy – dissection to study
the body system: musculoskeletal,
digestive, respiratory, etc.
• We will use a hybrid combination of
approaches.

The human uterus has a body but no horns. Why does
it make biological sense that pigs, dogs, and cats
have uteri with two well-developed horns?
