NPSpecies
First Iteration Deployed - NPSpecies 2.0.0
A proof of concept was unveiled at the I&M Data Management Conference in
February 2007, which depicted a single location to query and view data for
NPSpecies, NatureBib, and the NPS Data Store.
After solidifying the Roadmap use cases and user interface specifications, plans began on the first iteration of the new
Species Service. The first component to be developed was the Certified Species List released June 13, 2008, with three
subsequent releases in August 2008, October 2008, and February 2009.
In April 2007 work began writing NPSpecies use cases based on initial
comments from the proof of concept demo, new features and functionalities
expressed by users over the years, and solid features of the existing
NPSpecies system.
Examples of User Interface Screens - the Future of
The look and feel is currently NPSpecies
evolving as NRPC staff begin using newly purchased development tools and obtain feedback
from users. All information contained within these interface graphics is fictional and provided for example only.

A formal process of User Requirements Gathering began with a kickoff
meeting of the NPSpecies User Board June 26, 2007. During these user
requirements meetings all notes were compiled into a Roadmap Use Case
document.
Here is a sampling of the types of NPSpecies User Groups that were
contacted:

After all requirements were gathered many components that could be shared
across many NRPC applications were identified. This led to the deconstruction
of NPSpecies to its essential functions, thus defining its scope. NPSpecies
was deconstructed during early months of 2008.
These shareable components may also be referred to as infrastructure (i.e.,
Authentication, Units, and Taxonomy) or resource data (i.e., References and
Vouchers) and are slated for development in parallel with NPSpecies.
