times a paper has been cited

I. ISI Web of Science
1) Go to UH Library website: http://libweb.hawaii.edu/
2) Click on Electronic Resources link

3) Enter the following, check/uncheck boxes
4) Click on Search

5) Login to RESTRICTED zone of UH Lib. Website (2
different ways to do this)

5) Click on Web of Science
6) Repeat this process on the next screen

7) Uncheck boxes, then click General Search

Note: you don’t have to uncheck SSCI or A&HCI, but usually scientific
papers won’t be cited by papers in the Art & Humanities, etc.

8) Enter author, title, year info
9) Click search

10) Check # of times cited
11) Click on title or # of times cited for more info

II. Google Scholar (Beta)
1) Go to website: http://scholar.google.com/

2) Enter author name, click search

3) Find correct paper, look at Cited by link
Note: The number of citations for Nepstad et al. (1999) in GS (290) is greater than ISI
WS (267). Web of Science doesn’t include all journals. GS may easily confuse
author w/ others of similar last name, include non peer-reviewed works, etc. Click on
the link to see the actual references. WS is a more conservative estimate, GS more
liberal estimate. In your critique remember to report the source of the # of citations.
