Overview
• What the managers want
• CSI’s which can be measured with Argus
• Combine information need of different
managers
2
The Coastal managers
Many coastal managers in the coastal zone with
different responsibilities and information needs
•
•
•
•
RWS – keeping the coastline at a fixed position
Local authority – state and safety of the beach
Water board – protection against flooding
Nature conservation organisations – protection
of natural values
3
Available Argus Tools
• Bottomdepth in the surfzone
• Follow development underwater bars
• Determine morphology of the beach / dune foot
• Determine ripcurrent location
4
Bottomdepth in the surfzone
CSI’s: Momentary Coastline, bar height
5
Follow development nourishments and natural bars
CSI’s: Bar/nourishment position, beach position
6
Compare ‘natural’ coast and nourished coast
Area where nourishments are carried out
Egmond Coast3D
Egmond Jan van Speyk
7
Morphology of the beach / dune foot
High water
Low water
CSI’s: Intertidal coastline (beach volume), beach
width, erosion hot spot’s (dune foot)
8
Determine rip current location
Rip currents
CSI’s: Rip current location
9
Information need – Argus information
RWS: Volume/position nourishment, bottomdepth/volume
Municipality (Egmond): Dune state, beach width, rip
location
Water Board: Dune volume, height of sea defence
Nature organisation: state of animal and plant habitats

Will managers use Argus?
Problems to overcome:
• Conservative – good as it is
• Only ‘extra’ information
• Cost/benefit relation to low
Possibilities:
• Presentation of usefull Argus information
• Demonstration of possibilities in real case
• Choose area where information need of different coastal
managers can be captured by one Argus station
