Water Distribution Networks Under
Intermittent Pumping: Development of a
hydraulic model and Assessment of water
losses

Introduction
• Losses Problem
• Intermittent pumping
Objectives
• Assessment of water losses
• Hydraulic analysis using EPANET
Importance of study
• Losses from water distribution networks
are high in many areas in Nablus and thus
it is an on-going problem
• Water supply in Nablus is intermittent and
thus it is important to show the
applicability of EPANET in this case
Study area
• Nablus
• Iskan rujeeb
•Ein-Difna
Methodology
assessment
• Methodology
• Reasons
• houses
results
• Hydraulic model in EPANET with reality
• Losses
• Intermittent pumping by using tanks
• EPANET a good tool
Development of hydraulic
model
• Demand
• Pressure
• Elevations (470-510)m.
•GIS
• Pipes
510 m
470m
Hydraulic Model assumptions
Pattern behavior
•Tanks used to represent the demand.
•All areas in study area have the same flow
pattern behavior but with shifting.
•No back flow from the tanks to the network.
Output of EPANET
•Flow rate
Flow-time
Cumulative flow
distribution
• Velocity
source pipe
Net work pipe
House connection
• Pressure (2 bars)
Pressure-time
Cumulative distribution of
pressure
Conclusions
• EPANET and GIS are a good tools for
hydraulic analysis.
• Losses is equal 28% and for capita is 4
liters in average.
• Intermittent pumping is a main reason for
losses
Recommendations
•Water distribution network and meters
must be checked.
•Pressure must be decreased
•More detailed field work should be carried
out to assess water losses
