Training

• We have been making progress since this project started in 2007 by having a training session in Plummer, ID at our Information Technology (IT) center with tribes from all over the United States including Hawaii and Alaska. Later, a training session was held in Juneau, Alaska then at Grand Ronde, OR. This training session was also presented at the WAURISA Conference in Seattle, WA.

Adding Native Names to USGS maps

If you wish to participate we recommend the following steps:

Develop a list of the names you wish to get published. This should include native name, English translation, location in latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, and a recording of an individual saying the name. It is important to realize that these names will be available to the public, so we highly recommend not providing names that would draw attention to sites (Cultural Sensitive Sites) that may be damaged or misused.

the names ( recording) Get a tribal or community resolution that allows for these names to be sent to USGS and the Coeur d'Alene Tribe for use on The National Map Send your database and resolution to the Coeur d'Alene Tribe, along with an audio file of a native speaker saying each word. In addition, if you have video files or pictures of the sites please submit those at the same time. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe will then upload your names to its internet map server. At that time all names submitted will become available to the world. Send a copy of the database to Jenifer Runion at USGS so the names can be added to GNIS

Snoqualmie Nation

• The Snoqualmie Nation has sent us Native Names which has been posted. They also sent us MP3's. The names they sent are Q.ǝlbts (Camping Place) and Yǝlhʷ (Raging River). We are looking forward to getting more names from the Snoqualmie Nation in the near future.

Contacts

• • I have made contact with seventy two tribes so far and sent them E-mails, I have called twenty eight other tribes and left voice messages. There are about six hundred Tribes that I have not made contact with as of yet, but I will be contacting them.

I talked to several tribal leaders at our NCAI Veterans Conference in Worley, ID. They were very interested in what we are doing and would like to add names to the project.
