PELICAN

 An unmistakable bird of coastal water  Famous for its huge bill with expanding pouch.

PELICAN APPEARANCE

 One of the world’s larges birds.  5-8KG.

  WINGSP UP TO 3M. BENEATH IT’S LONG, FLATTENED BILL IS A BRIGHT YELLOW ORANGE POUCH FOR FEEDING.

HABITAT

 Salt bays, beaches, ocean.  Shallow waters along coast.

 Sheltered bays  Strays may appear on freshwater lakes inland.

Behavior

 Quiet animal  Likes plunging into water and coming to surface with fish in its bill.  Sometimes scavenges and will become tame.

DIET

 Fish  Menhaden  Smelt  Anchovies  Also some crustaceans

NESTING

 First breeds at the age 3 years or older.  They make the nest on ground or cliff of island, or on low trees such a mangroves.

 They lay 3 eggs, sometimes 2 or 4. It is incubated by both sexes,roughly 28-30 days.

 They live 12-14 years in the wild.
