Manioc Grater
Idea
• Help people in developing countries (Haiti)
• Market: hundreds of millions of people
 Haiti
 Countries with both
large scale poverty

• Produce 1 kg of
grated manioc
per minute

Background Research
• “Cassava Grinder”
from Nigeria –
different market,
different needs
• Also uses bicycle
power – shows that
it is an effective
source of energy
Source: AT Sourcebook
Experimentation
• Used ordinary rotary
cheese grinder to look at
possibilities with texture
variances
• Used a drill to test
feasibility
• Measured the torque at
different levels and
determined an effective
grater size
Results of Experiment
Stall Torque
0.2Nm
Grated Area
30cm2
Power
(assuming 2 rotations per sec)
2.5W
Assuming we can run the manioc grater at
100W then the size of our machine should be:
• Diameter: 15cm
• Length: 15cm
Model
Hopper
Grated Manioc Exit
Bicycle driven gear
