sacrificed – Jesus)

Disciples Jn 1:35-42



Jesus returns to the Jordan and John the Baptist says:
“Behold the Lamb of God!” – Jesus is the lamb of
sacrifice
John now knows that it is time for his disciples to follow
Jesus
V. 38 – These two disciples call Jesus “Rabbi”



Rabbi in Greek = teacher
Rabbi in Hebrew = my great one
V. 38 – “Where are you staying?” – means they want to
speak to Jesus and know Him as a friend in his house

relationship with God

Theme of Discipleship


Disciple is a student; one who sits at the feet of a master
What is the pattern of discipleship?



Seek – The Lord
Say – Yes to the Call
Be responsible – Bring others to Jesus
The Wedding in Cana
(John 2:1-12)

“Son they have no wine”


The party depended on the wine
Mary simply presents the problem to Christ in total faith



“Woman… my hour is not yet come” – Passion
“Do whatever He tells you.” – The last recorded words of Mary
Water into Wine


The wine is far superior to the original
This is Jesus’ first public miracle

Brought about by obedience to the mother who was obedient to the
Holy Spirit
The Wedding at Cana

Improbable Miracle


This would have been known all over the area by nightfall
The seed of the woman had begun to crush the head of
Satan and they both knew it (Protoevangelium)


Passion
She had started him on the journey to his crucifixion
Moneychangers
and the Temple

The Cleansing of God’s House (Jn 2:13-25)


Jesus and his group continue to Jerusalem
for the Passover
Outraged by the Court of the Gentiles, Christ
makes a scourge of cords and drives out the
moneychangers and merchants (v. 15)

The Cleansing of God’s House

The Sadducees ask for a sign (v. 18)



They believe that God could send a prophet and
they trusted God
His answer mystifies them (destroy the Temple) –
Jesus is the Temple (v. 19)
He performs more miracles in Jerusalem
Nicodemus

Conversation with Nicodemus (Jn 3: 1-15)



He was a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin
He secretly visits at night
There are four truths in their conversation:




Man must be baptized – “born anew”
The work of the Spirit on the soul is like the wind – “it is with
everyone”
Christ has authority as the Son of God
Christ must die on the cross for the forgiveness of sin
 Bronze Serpent

John 3:16
Leaving Judea for Galilee
(John 3:22 – 4:42)

First Preaching about the Kingdom

He preaches; His disciples baptize


He starts to draw bigger crowds than John (still
baptizing)
John explains that he is not the Christ
 V. 30 - “He must increase; I must decrease”
Leaving Judea for Galilee

Arrest of the Baptist





Herod Antipas had married his brother’s wife
John the Baptist speaks out against this
He is imprisoned
Christ is now known throughout Palestine
Jesus goes up to Galilee…
Leaving Judea for Galilee

Conversation with a Samaritan Woman (Jn 4:4)


Jesus engages in conversation with a woman at the well
Jesus speaks of Sanctifying Grace and the one object in
its way – sin

He reveals to her that He is the Messiah (v. 26)
The Ministry
in Galilee Begins
(Luke 5:1-11)

Fishers of Men


The disciples are working while Jesus preaches
Now there is the time of a definitive calling

Jesus preaches from Peter’s boat and Jesus tells them to go
farther out for fish
 “It seems impossible but if you say so” (v. 5)




There is a massive amount of fish
This miracle hits home for Peter and he repents (v. 8)
He is afraid – He sees himself as Christ sees him
“Fear not, I will make you fishers of men” (v. 10)
