ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
UNIV OF CALIF. SANTA CRUZ
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Established in 1994, the Doctoral program in the Department of
Environmental Studies at UCSC emphasizes close facultystudent interactions, department-wide intellectual exchange,
and the flexibility for continued innovation.
The goal of our Ph.D. program is to develop exceptional
individuals with strong foundations in their own fields, and the
ability to work with those in other relevant disciplines.
The program draws from two main areas: ecology and social
science. These all are historically independent fields and
UCSC's Environmental Studies program is one of the first to
link them.
UC SANTA CRUZ
ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
Requirements for the Doctorate
A dissertation in environmental studies is expected to present
an original contribution to the understanding of a significant
environmental problem or issue.
It should demonstrate a clear understanding of the relevant
literature, careful and rigorous research design, and effective
communication of the results within the context of their area of
emphasis.

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
Environmental Studies Program
Our program sets the standard in interdisciplinary dialogue and
collaboration, with more than one hundred participating faculty
from thirty campus programs and departments.
Our degree programs are flexible and tailored to meet specific
educational and career goals, providing students with the
opportunities to work alongside world-class scholars and
researchers, develop concrete skills and analytical abilities, and
gain hands-on experience relevant to careers in government
agencies, non-government organizations, private industry, and
academic fields.
Doctoral Program
Our doctoral program in Environmental Sciences, Studies, and
Policy (ESSP) offers a unique opportunity to pursue
interdisciplinary study of environmental issues while gaining
a thorough grounding in the methods and knowledge-base of
a traditional discipline.
Students have the freedom to focus their study in any field that
offers the PhD, and to supplement this “focal” area with
concentrations drawn from any area of graduate study in the
university.
This flexibility allows our students to design an individualized
curriculum responsive to their educational and career goals.
Doctoral Dissertation
a. Completion of 18 credits of ENVS 603 Dissertation, as
required by the Graduate School.
b. Completion and defense of a written dissertation and
approval of the dissertation by a committee chosen in
accordance with Graduate School regulations.
The committee must have at least five members.
The chair and two additional members must be from the focal
department.
At least three members of the committee must be participants
in the Environmental Studies Program.

Environmental Studies Program
Environmental Studies is the body of knowledge related to the
interactions between people and the natural world and is an
important ingredient of a liberal education.
The principal mission of the Environmental Studies Program is
to investigate and teach about natural and social systems and
provide students with the opportunity to assess the complexity
of environmental problems and understand how to search for
solutions to these problems.
Dartmouth College
Hanover, NH 03755 USA
The Environmental Studies Program (ENVS)
offers courses on a wide range of topics
including environmental science, ecological
economics, and international environmental
issues, conservation of biodiversity, ecological
agriculture, environmental justice/racism,
environmental journalism, and environmental
law.
The objective of the Dartmouth IGERT is to develop a new
generation of environmental scientists and engineers who:
1. Have an interdisciplinary view of polar regions and their
importance to global environmental change
2. Understand the societal and ethical implications of their
research, the policy process and the role of western
scientific management and traditional knowledge in decision
making processes
3. Are able to communicate their science to diverse
audiences
4. Upon graduation are already engaged with the
international science and engineering community, hastening
their development both as global science citizens and as
researchers

IDEC: INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPEMENT AND COOPERATION
The Graduate School for International Development and Cooperation's
Special Program for Human Resources in Sustainable Development of
Developing Countries -Environment, Education, and Peace- / Master's
Program (2 years), Doctoral Program (3 years)
This program aims to train human resources who can contribute to
the sustainable development of developing countries, especially in the
field of environment, education, and peace-building. This program will
recruit excellent students from developing countries, especially those
from Africa and Asia. Both lectures and research advice will be given
in English. The focus of the program will be on developing the
necessary problem solving skills required in developing countries, as
problems and their solutions vary from country to country.
The field of environment
In this field, students are expected to carry out research related to
policies and environmentally-friendly technologies for sustainable
development, based on the knowledge of global, regional and
urban environment. The target area will be the developing
countries, especially in Asia.
IDEC is conducting the interdisciplinary research and educational
activities in cooperation with universities and institutes in Asian
countries, to create new knowledge forthe innovation of
international environment cooperation.
Based on the results of the above activities, the field of
environment will continue to educate foreign students and help
them to do research from the viewpoint of international
cooperation.
Interdisciplinary study and research
Students are strongly recommended to do interdisciplinary
study and research.
Development cannot be achieved only by pursuing economic
development, but it is necessary to have good environment, fair
and good quality education, and peace at the basis of
sustainable development beneficial for all the citizens.
Most problems in the society cannot be solved just technically,
but require deep understanding and considerations on
humanity, society and nature to solve them.

Program Doktor Interdisiplin
INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH vs.
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY
Interdisciplinary research (IDR) is a mode of research
by teams or individuals that integrates information,
data, techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts,
and/or theories from two or more disciplines or
bodies of specialized knowledge to advance
fundamental understanding or to solve problems
whose solutions are beyond the scope of a single
discipline or area of research practice.
Program Doktor Interdisiplin
INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH vs.
INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY
Interdisciplinary research and education are inspired
by the drive to solve complex questions and
problems, whether generated by scientific curiosity
or by society, and lead researchers in different
disciplines to meet at the interfaces and frontiers of
those disciplines and even to cross frontiers to form
new disciplines.
In interdisciplinary research, personality and
attitudes of researchers are at least as important
for success as discipline base and specialisation.
Useful characteristics are:
• flexibility, adaptability, creativity
• curiosity about, and willingness to learn from, other disciplines
• an open mind to ideas coming from other disciplines and
experiences
• good communication and listening skills
• an ability to bridge the gap between theory and practice
• a good team worker: Kesatuan antara

Describe the leadership role and management strategy to deliver
the desired outcomes

Multi-methodology
Multimethodology, mixed methods research,
compatibility thesis or pragmatist paradigm is an
approach to professional research that combines the
collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative
data.
The term 'multimethodology' appears to be more widely used
in operations research than in other branches of social
scienceS.
This approach has been gaining in popularity since the 1980s
Defining mixed methods
Combining quantitative and qualitative methods
sounds like a good idea.
Using multiple approaches can capitalise on
the strengths of each approach and offset their
different weaknesses.
It could also provide more comprehensive answers
to research questions, going beyond the limitations
of a single approach.
Multi-method studies
Multi-method studies use different methods of data collection
and analysis within a single research paradigm.
For example, you might conduct a qualitative study in which
you observe as a participant and also interview
people.
Or in a quantitative study you might carry out an attitude
survey of students and also collect information from computer
records about the frequency of ‘hits’ in the use of web-based
course materials.
In other words, you make use of methods that are broadly
compatible within a paradigm or a set of beliefs and values.
