Sunday in
Ordinary Time
5 Sept 2004
GREETING
In the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen
The grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ and the love of God and
the fellowship of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.
And also with you.
Penitential Rite
My brothers and sisters, to
prepare ourselves to celebrate
the sacred mysteries, let us call
to mind our sins.
I confess to almighty God, and
to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my
own fault,
in my thoughts and in my
words, in what I have done, and
in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever
virgin, all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and
sisters, to pray for me to the
Lord our God.
May almighty God have mercy
on us, forgive us our sins, and
bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Opening Prayer
Let us pray
God our Father, you redeem us
and make us your children in
Christ. Look upon us, give us
true freedom and bring us to the
inheritance you promised.
Amen
Liturgy of the Word
First Reading
(Wisdom 9:13-18)
For who can learn the counsel
of God? Or who can discern
what the Lord wills? For the
reasoning of mortals is
worthless, and our designs are
likely to fail; for a perishable
body weighs down the soul,
and this earthy tent burdens the
thoughtful mind. We can hardly
guess at what is on earth,
and what is at hand we find with
labour; but who has traced out
what is in the heavens? Who
has learned your counsel,
unless you have given wisdom
and sent your holy spirit from
on high? And thus the paths of
those on earth were set right,
and people were taught what
pleases you, and were saved by
wisdom.”
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
R. In every age, O Lord, you have
been our refuge.
You turn us back to dust, and
say, “turn back you mortals.”
For a thousand years in your
sight are like yesterday when it
is past, or like a watch in the
night.
R. In every age, O Lord, you have
been our refuge.
You sweep them away; they are
like a dream, like grass that is
renewed in the morning; in the
morning it flourishes and is
renewed; in the evening it
fades and withers.
R. In every age, O Lord, you have
been our refuge.
So teach us to count our days
that we may gain a wise heart.
Turn, O Lord! How long? Have
compassion on your servants!
R. In every age, O Lord, you have
been our refuge.
Satisfy us in the morning with
your steadfast love, so that we
may rejoice and be glad all our
days. Let the favour of the
Lord our God be upon us, and
prosper for us the work of our
hands.
Second Reading
(Philemon 9-10, 12-17)
Paul, do this as an old man, and
now also as a prisoner of Christ
Jesus. I am appealing to you for
my child, Onesimus, whose
father I have become during my
imprisonment. I am sending him,
that is, my own heart, back to
you. I wanted to keep him with
me, so that he might be of
service to me in your place
during my imprisonment for the
gospel; but I preferred to do
nothing without your consent,
in order that your good deed
might be voluntary and not
something forced. Perhaps this
is the reason he was separated
from you for a while, so that you
might have him back for ever,
no longer as a slave but as
more than a slave, a beloved
brother—especially to me but
how much more to you, both in
the flesh and in the Lord. So if
you consider me your partner,
welcome him as you would
welcome me.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
A reading from the holy Gospel
according to Luke.
Glory to you Lord.
Large crowds were travelling
with him; and he turned and said
to them, ‘Whoever comes to me
and does not hate father and
mother, wife and children,
brothers and sisters, yes, and
even life itself, cannot be my
disciple. Whoever does not carry
the cross and follow me cannot
be my disciple. For which of you,
intending to build a tower, does
not first sit down and estimate
the cost, to see whether he has
enough to complete it?
Otherwise, when he has laid a
foundation and is not able to
finish, all who see it will begin to
ridicule him, saying, “This fellow
began to build and was not able
to finish.” Or what king, going
out to wage war against another
king, will not sit down first and
consider whether he is able with
ten thousand to oppose the one
who comes against him with
twenty thousand? If he cannot,
then, while the other is still far
away, he sends a delegation and
asks for the terms of peace. So
therefore, none of you can
become my disciple if you do not
give up all your possessions.
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
Homily
Profession of Faith
We believe in One God, the
Father, the almighty, maker of
heaven and earth of all that is
seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus
Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, one in
being with the Father,
Through him all things were
made. For us men and for our
salvation he came down from
heaven;
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he was born of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was
crucified under Pontius
Pilate; he suffered, died and
was buried. On the third day He
rose again in fulfillment of the
Scriptures;
He ascended into Heaven and
is seated at the Right Hand of
the Father. He will come again
in glory to judge the living and
the dead, and His kingdom will
have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father
and the Son. With the Father
and the Son he is worshiped
and glorified. He has spoken
through the Prophets
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of
the dead and the life of the
world to come.
Amen.
Prayer of the Faithful
R. Lord, hear our prayer.
For the pilgrim Church, willing
partner in the building of God’s
kingdom, we pray to the Lord:
R. Lord, hear our prayer.
For wisdom and selfessness in
those committed to public
service, we pray to the Lord:
R. Lord, hear our prayer.
For persons throughout the
world deprived of religious
freedom, we pray to the Lord:
R. Lord, hear our prayer.
For those preparing for baptism
and for the parish communities
guiding them, we pray to the
Lord:
R. Lord, hear our prayer.
Offertory Song
Liturgy of the Eucharist
Pray, my brothers and sisters,
that our sacrifice may be
acceptable to God, the almighty
Father.
May the Lord accept the
sacrifice at your hands for the
praise and glory of his name,
for our good, and the good of all
his Church.
Prayer over the gifts
God of peace and love, may our
offering bring you true worship
and make us one with you.
Amen.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord
our God.
It is right to give him thanks
and praise.
PREFACE
Father, all-powerful and everliving God, we do well always
and everywhere to give you
thanks through Jesus Christ our
Lord.
Through his cross and
resurrection he freed us from sin
and death and called us to the
glory that has made us a chosen
race, a royal priesthood, a holy
nation, a people set apart.
Everywhere we proclaim your
mighty works, for you have
called us out of darkness into
your own wonderful light.
And so, with all the choirs of
angles in heaven,we proclaim
your glory and join in their
unending hymn of praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of
power and might, heaven and
earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord. Hosanna in
the highest.
Eucharistic Prayer II
Invocation of the Holy Spirit
Lord, you are holy indeed, the
fountain of all holiness. Let
your Spirit come upon these
gifts to make them holy, so that
they may become for us the
body and blood of our Lord,
Jesus Christ.
The Lord’ Supper
Before he was given up to
death, a death he freely
accepted, he took bread and
gave you thanks. He broke the
bread, gave it to his disciples,
and said:
“Take this, all of you, and eat it:
this is my body which will be
given up for you.”
When supper was ended, he
took the cup. Again he gave you
thanks and praise, gave the cup
to his disciples, and said:
“Take this, all of you, and drink
from it, this is the cup of my
blood, the blood of the new and
everlasting covenant. It will be
shed for you and for all so that
sins may be forgiven. Do this in
memory of me.”
Let us proclaim the mystery of
faith:
When we eat this bread,
When we drink this cup,
We proclaim your glory
Until you come again.
In memory of his death and
resurrection, we offer you,
Father, this life-giving bread,
this saving cup. We thank you
for counting us worthy to stand
in your presence and serve you.
May all of us who share in the
body and blood of Christ be
brought together in unity by the
Holy Spirit.
For the Church
Lord, remember your Church
throughout the world; make us
grow in love, together with
our pope - John Paul II. Our
bishop - Joseph Zen, John Tong,
and all the clergy.
For the dead
Remember our brothers and
sisters who have gone to their
rest in the hope of rising again;
bring them and all the departed
into the light of your presence.
In communion with the saints
Have mercy on us all; make us
worthy to share eternal life with
Mary, the virgin Mother of God
with the apostles, and with all
the saints who have done your
will throughout the ages. May
we praise you in union with
them, and give you glory
through your Son, Jesus Christ.
In praise of God
Through him, with him, in him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit
all glory and honor is yours
almighty Father
for ever and ever.
Amen
COMMUNION RITE
Lord’s prayer
Let us pray with confidence to
the Father in the words our
Savior gave us.
Our Father who art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who
trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
Deliver us. Lord from every evil
and grant us peace in our day.
In your mercy keep us free from
sin and protect us from all
anxiety as we wait in joyful hope
for the coming of our Savior,
Jesus Christ.
For the kingdom, the power and
the glory are yours, now and for
ever.
Sign of Peace
Lord Jesus Christ, you said to
your apostles: I leave you peace
my peace I give you. Look not
only our sins, but on the faith of
your Church, and grant us the
peace and unity of your
kingdom where you live for ever
and ever.
Amen
The peace of the Lord be with
you always.
And also with you.
Let us offer each other the sign
of peace.
Lamb of God…
Communion
This is the Lamb of God who
takes away the sins of the world.
Happy are those who are called
to his supper.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive
you, but only say the word and I
shall be healed.
Communion Antiphon
Like a deer that longs for
running streams, my soul longs
for you, my God. My soul is
thirsting for the living God.
Pray After Communion
Lord, your word and your
sacrament give us food and life.
May this gift of your Son lead
us to share his life for ever.
Church Notice
Prayer for Vocation
O heavenly Father, increase the faith
of our communities, particularly of
those individuals whom you have
chose and whom you will choose for
your service.
May the love of God enkindle the
hearts of many young people, so
that they may respond to your call
with generosity and perseverance.
May the strength of the Holy Spirit
guide us to do His holy will, and to
be ready to offer our sufferings in
union with that great sacrifice of
your Son Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Concluding Rite
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
May almighty God bless you, the
Father, and the Son, and the Holy
Spirit.
Amen.
Go in the peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God.
