Innovation in Islamic Countries
 20-25% of the world’s population are muslim
 30-40 countries in the world are populous muslim
countries
 Very low intellectual productivity
 Lagging behind in innovation process
Why
Regional Symposium on Innovation Technology Capacity Building, Islamabad, Pakistan
Innovation in Islamic
Countries
Importing the technologies from developed
countries and using those technologies.
No significant R&D activities for inventing own
technology.
Mysteriously, even World Bank does not encourage
R&D for new technology in Developing countries

Innovation in Islamic Countries
If we do not develop our own R&D
Islamic countries will always be at the consumers end
and thus Islamic countries will become a market for the
technological product of the industrial countries.
Islamic countries will always lag behind in terms of
economy and technology.
We should develop our technical skills and build
our own R&D so that we can produce
technological products by ourselves.

Research Units in Japanese Universities
 There are well-planned and systematic research units
(Laboratories) in Japanese Universities.
 Each Unit Consists of




one professor,
one or two associate professors,
two to four research associates and
around 20 senior undergraduate
and graduate students.
Regional Symposium on Innovation Technology Capacity Building, Islamabad, Pakistan
Research Units in Japanese Universities
 Regular weekly seminars and discussions on research
problems in the research units.
 Every activity is laboratory based.
 Senior students supervise research of junior students.

Japanese Policy for Research Success
 Population of age group 2035 are encouraged to do
innovative research.
 Foreign research workforce of
age group 20-35 are invited
to Japan by various lucrative
programs like Scholarships,
COE and JSPS programmes
to
work
under
senior
Japanese professors.
 Reputed foreign researchers
are invited for encouraging
and supervising
junior
Japanese
researchers by
JSPS programs.

Academia-Industry Collaboration in Japan
 Surplus funds from the industry to universities for doing research
even merely doing theoretical research.
 Many universities have developed industry creation hatcheries
where research on innovation of new industrial products, training
of manpower are done jointly by industry and university people.

Innovation Processes in Bangladesh
 Grameen Bank – an example of successful innovation in
Bangladesh.
 The Grameen Bank Project came into operation with the
following objectives:
 extend banking facilities to poor men and women
 eliminate the exploitation of the poor by money lenders
 create opportunities for self-employment for the vast multitude of
unemployed people in rural Bangladesh
 bring the disadvantaged, mostly the women from the poorest
households, within the fold of an organizational format which they
can understand and manage by themselves
 The bank and Dr. Md. Yunus, the founder were jointly
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, "for their efforts to
create economic and social development” in 2006.

Symposium on Innovation Technology Capacity Building, Islamabad, Pakistan
Summary and Conclusion
 Followings are some recommendations for making
innovation processes successful.
 Study and analyze the local needs and problems.
 Give strength on research and development.
 Establish effective research units in universities of Islamic
countries and create Center of Excellence as an umbrella body to
monitor the activities of research units.
 Establish strong industry-academia relationship and motivate
industries to provide financial assistance for supporting research
projects.
 Create facilities to encourage and motivate young generation for
doing research.
Regional Symposium on Innovation Technology Capacity Building, Islamabad, Pakistan
Summary and Conclusion
 Followings are some recommendations for making
innovation processes successful.
 Invite prominent Muslim researchers working in the developed
countries to work in their own countries. (Note that Korea and
China have already started this strategy. )
 Establish technology access centers throughout the cuntry to
disseminate the research findings, so that the end users can
avail new technologies from the nearby assess centers.
 Conduct a country wide campaign to popularize new
technologies.
Three days notice is not enough to prepare an effective
prescription for successful innovative processes !!!
