Teaching/Coaching the Beginning and Advancing Shooters
The best way to learn is to teach
At practices
At USAS/CMP/NRA local camps and clinics
Future Shooting Sports Interests
4-H smallbore Rifle, Pistol, Archery, Hunting areas of competition
Are they dedicated enough to go on to a Collegiate/Olympic level of
competition?
LEADERSHIP & TEACHING OTHERS
The VC4H Senior shooters put on a Shooting class at Novice camp this
summer for over 90 Novice 4-Hers
Personal Shooting Gear
makes practice and competition less frantic
Start with the basics and work up
Pace the investment with the interest and dedication
Make it easy to pass down to siblings or sell to others
4-H Shoots “SPORTER” Air Rifles
As opposed to Olympic style “PRECISION” Air Rifles
The National Three-Position Air Rifle Council introduced the
sporter class to develop new shooters to competition with a
minimum of equipment and expense
The sporter class places limits not only on the rifle, but on the
clothing worn and extra equipment as well
Minimum Personal Gear
VC4HSS has some “club” gear that has been donated by the
USAS and CMP organizations
Individuals may also be able to borrow other shooters gear
For the first week or two this works fine to see if there is an
interest
If interest is evident then some gear is recommended
RECOMMENDED FIRST GEAR
SHOES – comfortable – may NOT support the ankle … must be below the ankle
EYE Protection – 4-H competitions require safety glasses ($9)
Ear Plugs - Not required, but help the shooter to “tune-out” the world
Shooters Journal – Free from CMP (ask me, I have them)
Range Bag – Keep the stuff organized (about $20)
Sweatshirt – Tightens the position and pads the equipment.
Sling attachment point. A 12.5oz Carhart pullover is great for this (~$25)
Shooters Glove - Fingerless is better for sporter. ($20 @ Monard USA)
Kneeling Roll – Better than sitting on the foot ($14 @ Monard USA)
The Rifle
An example of an Olympic PRECISION Air Rifle - Compressed Air
Low end starts at $800
This one – with sights
is about $3400
The favorite of many
JRTOC Precision programs
The Daisy Avanti 888 Sporter - Compressed CO2
4-H club price $219
- Stock diopter sights
- NRA 1-inch sling
Optional Advanced Sights
- Gamo Rear $80
- Daisy 753 Front $15
Other Rifles
Daisy Avanti XS-40
(Compressed Air)
Custom CZ S200 for Daisy
Current prices are above $500
Spare parts are hard to come by and are expensive
We currently use these for our smaller shooters as they
are much lighter than the 888’s
We will most probably convert these to AR silhouette by
replacing the sights with scopes
GEAR – Start Small and add on
Shooting can be expensive.
The grand total for a “complete” Sporter AR package can run as high as
$900-$1000
Not so bad when compared to a PRECISION package (~$15K)
DON’T BUY IT ALL AT ONCE!!!!
DON’T BUY IT ALL AT ONCE!!!!
DON’T BUY IT ALL AT ONCE!!!!
Most of the gear can be used for the smallbore rifle
competitions as well
Please check with me before purchasing any gear as
4-H can usually get very good prices
