General Tips for College
Admission

Check academic requirements for
admission
Minimum GPA?
 Required courses? (fine arts, etc.)

Make sure the STUDENT completes
the application (not the parent)
 Determine if additional materials
are needed (teacher recommendation

form, counselor form, etc.)
When To Apply
•
•
•
•
Check college admissions deadlines
Some colleges may give preference to
early applicants; check with your colleges
of interest
Many colleges will consider students for
certain merit scholarships if they apply by
the first or second deadline
Receiving a decision before March is ideal
for most students
Admissions Terminology






Early Decision: usually binding (you must attend the
college if you are admitted)
Early Admission: allows you to receive a decision
more quickly
Rolling Admission: the college accepts applications
throughout the year
Deferral: the college needs more information (first
semester grades, test scores, etc.) before an
admissions decision can be made
Wait List: the student will be admitted IF there is room
remaining in the freshman class
