Baptism – Part 3
We will do a survey of the New
Testament teaching on Baptism
with 2 parts in mind –
What Baptism IS
What Baptism DOES
Baptism IS How we get into Christ –
Galatians 3:27 - For as
many of you as were
baptized into Christ have
put on Christ.
Romans 6:3 - Or do you not
know that as many of us as
were baptized into Christ
Jesus were baptized into His
death?
Baptism IS Accompanied by faith and
repentance
Mark 16:16 – He who believes
and is baptized will be saved; but
he who does not believe will be
condemned.
Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said to
them, “Repent, and let every one
of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of
sins; and you shall receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit.
Baptism IS God’s terms of surrender
Matthew 7:21 – “Not everyone
who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’
shall enter the kingdom of
heaven, but he who does the will
of My Father in heaven.
Baptism IS Our signal to God that we have
accepted Christ’s gospel
1 Corinthians 15:1-2 –
1Moreover, brethren, I declare to
you the gospel which I preached
to you, which also you received
and in which you stand, 2by
which also you are saved, if you
hold fast that word which I
preached to you—unless you
believed in vain.
Baptism IS The external washing with
water and the internal washing
away of sin by God
1 Peter 3:21 – There is also an
antitype which now saves us—
baptism (not the removal of the
filth of the flesh, but the answer
of a good conscience toward
God), through the resurrection of
Jesus Christ,
Baptism IS Calling on the name of the
Lord
Acts 22:16 - And now why are
you waiting? Arise and be
baptized, and wash away your
sins, calling on the name of the
Lord.’
Baptism IS Being unified with Christ in his death,
burial and resurrection
Romans 6:3-5 - 3Or do you not know
that as many of us as were baptized into
Christ Jesus were baptized into His
death? 4Therefore we were buried with
Him through baptism into death, that
just as Christ was raised from the dead
by the glory of the Father, even so we
also should walk in newness of life. 5For
if we have been united together in the
likeness of His death, certainly we also
shall be in the likeness of His
resurrection,
Baptism IS Clothing ourselves with Christ
Revelation 3:5 - He who
overcomes shall be clothed in
white garments, and I will not blot
out his name from the Book of
Life; but I will confess his name
before My Father and before His
angels.
Galatians 3:27 - For as many of
you as were baptized into Christ
have put on Christ.
Baptism IS Accepting Christ on His terms,
not ours
Romans 10:16 - But they have
not all obeyed the gospel. For
Isaiah says, “Lord, who has
believed our report?”
Baptism IS WHEN our sins are forgiven
Acts 3:19 - Repent therefore and
be converted, that your sins may
be blotted out, so that times of
refreshing may come from the
presence of the Lord,
Acts 22:16 - And now why are
you waiting? Arise and be
baptized, and wash away your
sins, calling on the name of the
Lord.’
Baptism IS WHEN we receive the Holy
Spirit
Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said to
them, “Repent, and let every one
of you be baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of
sins; and you shall receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit.
Baptism IS HOW and WHEN we come in
contact with the blood of
Christ
Romans 6:3-4 - 3Or do you not
know that as many of us as were
baptized into Christ Jesus were
baptized into His death?
4Therefore we were buried with
Him through baptism into death,
that just as Christ was raised
from the dead by the glory of the
Father, even so we also should
walk in newness of life.
Baptism IS WHEN we are reborn
John 3:5 - Jesus answered,
“Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born of water and
the Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God.
Baptism IS An act of faith
Mark 16:16 - He who believes and is
baptized will be saved; but he who does
not believe will be condemned.
Acts 8:36-37 - 36Now as they went
down the road, they came to some
water. And the eunuch said, “See, here
is water. What hinders me from being
baptized?” 37Then Philip said, “If you
believe with all your heart, you may.”
And he answered and said, “I believe
that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
Baptism IS HOW we enter the
kingdom of God
John 3:5 - Jesus answered,
“Most assuredly, I say to you,
unless one is born of water and
the Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God.
Baptism IS WHEN we are added to the
church
Acts 2:47 - praising God and
having favor with all the people.
And the Lord added to the church
daily those who were being
saved.
Baptism IS WHEN we exchange our
life for His
2 Corinthians 5:21 - For He
made Him who knew no sin to be
sin for us, that we might become
the righteousness of God in Him.
Baptism IS WHEN we die to ourselves
and come alive in Christ
1 Corinthians 15:22 – For
as in Adam all die, even so
in Christ all shall be made
alive.
Romans 6:11 - Likewise
you also, reckon yourselves
to be dead indeed to sin, but
alive to God in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Baptism IS Washing of regeneration,
and renewal of the Holy
Spirit
Titus 3:5 - not by works of
righteousness which we
have done, but according to
His mercy He saved us,
through the washing of
regeneration and renewing
of the Holy Spirit,
Baptism IS The starting gun of a race
of a new life
Romans 6:4 - Therefore we
were buried with Him
through baptism into death,
that just as Christ was
raised from the dead by the
glory of the Father, even so
we also should walk in
newness of life.
Baptism IS Proclaiming in Christ
the resurrection of the
dead
Romans 6:5 - For if we
have been united
together in the likeness
of His death, certainly we
also shall be in the
likeness of His
resurrection,
Baptism IS WHEN the old dies and
the new arises
Romans 6:6 - knowing
this, that our old man
was crucified with Him,
that the body of sin might
be done away with, that
we should no longer be
slaves of sin.
Baptism IS The point when we
become saved
1 Peter 3:21 - There is also
an antitype which now saves
us—baptism (not the
removal of the filth of the
flesh, but the answer of a
good conscience toward
God), through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ,
Baptism IS HOW we scripturally
make a conscious
decision to dedicate
our lives to Christ
Galatians 3:27 - For as
many of you as were
baptized into Christ have
put on Christ.
Baptism IS A command of God
Acts 10:48 - And he
commanded them to be
baptized in the name of
the Lord. Then they
asked him to stay a few
days.
Baptism IS The gavel striking the
bench proclaiming
forgiveness of sins
Acts 2:38 - Then Peter said
to them, “Repent, and let
every one of you be
baptized in the name of
Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins; and you
shall receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit.

SUMMARY
When accompanied by FAITH
and REPENTANCE, baptism is
how and when our sins are
washed away.
If it is NOT done for the purpose
of washing our sins away – it is
not the ONE baptism of the NT.
VAILD BAPTISM 3 things are necessary for a
baptism to be valid in the
sight of God:
1. MODE – immersion
2. SUBJECT – believes,
repents, confesses
3. PURPOSE – for the
forgiveness of sins
