Dear Parents and Friends of SES, With the Christmas and New Year’s holidays just around the corner and Thanksgiving behind us it is a good time to reflect on just how fortunate we are to be citizens in our great country. One of the many benefits of living in the United States is our free universal education system, one that seeks to educate each and every youngster to his or her potential. Viewed from a historical perspective and even compared today to other countries throughout the world, this is a unique concept, namely: that all children deserve an education and that, as a result, each one of them may enjoy unlimited possibilities in life. It is our job as parents and educators to expect our youngsters to do their best and take advantage of these unique opportunities while providing them with as much assistance and encouragement as possible. We know that when the home and school work together, students are presented with a unified message and will do better academically. We at SES pledge to do our best toward that end and would ask that you join us in this effort. In fact, the second of our four school goals for 2011 – 2012 is to “sustain a positive partnership with parents, community, and staff in order to increase student achievement and attendance.” One way you can assist in this area is to become active in your child’s educational program, working closely with his or her teacher. Another strategy is to make sure that you and your child are involved in the SES Read and Respond program that asks students to read twenty minutes in the evening four nights a week and log short written responses . While this is a simple thing to do and one that takes only a few minutes a day, it is also one that is already proving beneficial for those students who are participating. There are a number of activities that each of us can do with children to enable them to achieve and become better students. Don’t hesitate to ask your child’s teacher, Mrs. Thurber our reading specialist, Mrs. Gloyd our math specialist, or our media teacher, Mrs. Embert, for some suggestions; they would be happy to serve you and your child.

Have a Happy Holiday and a prosperous New Year.

Sincerely, Lloyd W. Taylor, Ed.D.

December is a wonderful time to read familiar stories with your child. You can also use any holiday cards you receive to help your child build a collection of things he/she can read. Help your child find high frequency words when you are reading together. We will be doing lots of counting and using numbers beyond 10 in December. Use seasonal items to help your child count. For example, how many lights are on a string of lights, how many cards are you sending, how many packages are under the tree and how many cookies are being baked.

Have a wonderful time with your family during the holiday!

Happy Holidays! The weather is getting colder, please remember to dress your children in layers. We will be going outside as much as possible. We have another busy month ahead. We will be studying the following units in December.

This project is due Monday, December 12, 2011. Your child was given guidelines and a rubric back in October. This project allows students with an opportunity to use technology to research information and create a PowerPoint presentation. However, this project does not have to be done on the computer. Students are encouraged to use books and encyclopedias as reliable sources of information. If your child does not have access to a computer or chooses to complete the project in another format that is completely acceptable. Students may complete a scrapbook or essay about his/her state in place of the Power Point presentation.

Classroom supplies Please be sure that your child has plenty of pencils and paper to complete his/her classwork and homework. Your child also may be coming to the end of his/her first reading comprehension notebook and it may need to be updated to start the New Year.

Reading Math Matters

We had 170 students receive an award certificate and a free book at the awards assembly on Nov. 18th for meeting their reading goal for Quarter 1! Congratulations!

Keep up the good work! Let's see if we can beat that number for Quarter 2. There are 9 weeks in Quarter 2 where students need to read a minimum of 20 minutes - 4 nights per week and then write a response about what they have read.

Measurement

We use math to measure everyday! Children need to learn many things about measurement. Younger children learn to compare lengths and sizes of objects. They can sort objects from shortest to longest, narrowest to widest, lightest to heaviest. Next, we use tools to measure to the nearest inch or centimeter. Then we measure more precisely, to the nearest ½ inch or ¼ inch or even 1/8 inch. You can get your child to help you measure objects at home. Have them help you cut and measure gift wrap for the holidays.

We also measure volumes when we are cooking- ½ cup of sugar, 1 ¼ cup of flour, a quart of milk. With holiday baking time here, this is a great time to practice measuring in the kitchen together. The more often children see these types of measurements being used at home, the more likely they will be to learn about them at school. Reading well is at the heart of all learning. Children who cannot read well, have difficulty learning. You can help make a difference for your child.

Please make time for your child to read. Read with them. Read to them. Talk about what they are reading. Discuss what they are going to write about what they have read. Help your child find books that they are interested in reading. Go to the public library often.

Make sure that books are on the list for your child to receive as gifts over the holidays.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday!

Mrs. Thurber Reading Specialist We measure time- starting with telling time to calculating how much time has passed. Children need to see both types of clocks- analog and digital- so they can easily tell the time. Ask children to set a timer and see how long a commercial or song is. Have them help tell time so the family can get somewhere on time. Older children can even help figure the time a family needs to leave in order to arrive at a destination on time. Tell them something like this: “It takes 20 minutes to get to Uncle Bob’s house. We need to be there in time for dinner at 5pm. When should we all be in the car?” Measurement is all around us and you can help your child be more successful at school when you talk about and do measuring together at home.

Guidance

Holiday Stress:

Children often times find the holidays just as stressful as the adults do around them. They are not immune to the hustle and bustle of the season and often times, their behaviors change around this time of year. The more relaxed the adults are, the more relaxed the children will be.

Some tips from childparenting.com: 1. Set a calm example:

Remember, they learn from modeling us.

2. Get your child moving: Exercise works for everyone, even when it’s cold! 3. Avoid overscheduling: Hard to do but it may be worth it to decline an invitation if you have already attended two other gatherings. Try combining activities and say no if it’s just too much.

4. Have your grade-schooler help you: Children love to help out. 5. Schedule some quiet time: Keep reading those books at bedtime!

Remind your child -- and yourself -- what the holidays are really all about.

Happy Holidays!

Health Room

Respiratory Etiquette During Cold & Flu Season

During the cough, cold and "flu" season, there are some simple tips that will help keep respiratory infections from spreading. You can help stop the spread of these germs by practicing "respiratory etiquette" — good health manners — such as covering your nose and mouth every time you sneeze, cough or blow your nose, putting used tissues in the trash, and washing your hands well and often whenever you or someone you are close to is sick. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your sleeve, at the bend of the inner elbow. These simple actions can prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria that are passed from person-to-person by the infected person when they cough, sneeze, or talk. Many diseases that can be spread this way include influenza, bacterial meningitis, whooping cough, SARS, measles, and chicken pox. Common symptoms of these illnesses are fever and cough or fever and rash.

SUDLERSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Title 1 School DECEMBER 2011 “Where Eagles SOAR!”

www.qacps.k12.md.us/ses/WELCOME.HTM

There are also some other simple precautions that healthy people can take to prevent catching germs from others: • • • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleaner. [when using soap and warm water, rub and scrub all surfaces of your hands vigorously, wash for 15-20 seconds] Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Don’t share food, utensils, beverage containers, pens, pencils, lipstick, or anything else that might be contaminated with respiratory germs. • • Avoid close contact with people who are sick if possible.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

If you or your child becomes ill, here are a few steps you can take for treatment. Get plenty of rest, drink lots of liquids, [avoid using alcohol and tobacco], and remember that over-the-counter medications help to relieve symptoms, not cure them and follow directions carefully. Always call your health care provider for further instructions if you or your child develops fever, rash, difficulty breathing, severe cough, thick sputum, or if you have any additional questions about symptoms not mentioned. And remember the “24 hour rule”; stay home from work or school until free from fever [without the aid of fever reducing medication], vomiting, diarrhea, or on treatment/medication for 24 hours.

Stay healthy!
