Grade Math
Week of 8/18/14
Monday: Bell Work
• 1) 7.2 + 4.31 =
• 2) 3.8 – 1.25 =
• 3) round to tenths- 2.9547
1. Estimate
What does this
word mean to
you?
This word actually
means…..
find an answer close
to the exact answer.
Examples…
Explain how
you would use
this word in
math.
Lesson
• Absolute Value and Opposites: 7. NS.1a
Describe situations in which opposite
quantities combine to make 0.
Lesson
• Absolute Value:
– How far a number is from zero.
Example "6" is 6 away from zero, but "-6" is also 6
away from zero.
So, the absolute value of 6 is 6, and the absolute
value of -6 is also 6.
The symbol "|" is placed either side to mean "Absolute
Value", so we can write: |-6| = 6
http://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/absolutevalue.html
-|-8| = -8
*If the negative is outside the
absolute value bar, it will create a
negative answer. It is the same as
multiplying the answer by -1.
*Can be written -1 • |-8| = -8
Additive Inverses (opposites)
What you add to a number to get zero.
The negative of a number.
Example:
The additive inverse of -5 is 5, because -5 + 5 = 0.
The additive inverse of +5 is -5 as well.
Exit / Closure
• Write in your NB (composition notebook)
3 things that you learned today.
**** Share with a friend.
Tuesday: Bell Work
1) |-28| =
2) -|32| =
3) - 29 _____ -30
2. Evaluate
What does this
word mean to
you?
This word actually
means…..
to find the value of
a numerical or
algebraic expression

Explain how
you would use
this word in
math.

Addition Notes
1) 2 integers with same sign
- Add the absolute values
-
Keep the same sign -2+-3 = -5 4+3=7
2) 2 integers with different signs
- find the difference of the absolute values
- keep sign of the greater absolute value
- 5 + 8= 3
4+ -2= 2
*same signs add and keep/ different signs subtract
Key words:
Deposit, ascend, rose, gain, increase, above
Subtraction Notes
1)
Change all subtraction problems to addition problems
Add the opposite following the addition rules
7- 15
2- (-3)
7+ (-15) = -8
2 + 3= 5
-5-3
-5 + (-3) = -8
*you can add the opposite because they are inverse
operations and “Undo” each other
Key words:
withdrawal, descend, loss, lowest, decrease, below
Multiplication Notes
• When multiplying 2 integers
- If the sign is the same *positive answer
- If the sign is different *negative answer
+•+=+
-• - =+
- •+=+•- =Key words: of, times
6 • 6= 36
-2 • -3 = 6
-5 • 3 = -15
7 • -2 = -14
Division Notes
• When dividing 2 integers
- If the sign is the same *positive answer
- If the sign is different *negative answer
+÷+=+
-÷- =+
- ÷+=+÷- =-
8÷2=4
-6 ÷ -3 = 2
-9 ÷ 3 = -3
4 ÷ -2 = -2
Key words: per, quotient
Exit / Closure
• Give 3 examples of why it would be
important for you to know the how to
subtract/ add integers.
Wednesday: Bell Work
1) -2 + 18 =
2) 4 • -25 =
3) -90 ÷ -10 =
3. Justify
What does this
word mean to
you?
Examples…
This word actually
means…..
to give a satisfactory
reason for something
done / create a viable
argument.
Explain how
you would use
this word in
math.
Lesson
• Integers with operations:
• SPI 0706.2.5 Solve contextual problems
that involve operations with integers.
Exit / Closure
• Why is it important to know the difference
between a withdrawal and an deposit?
Thursday: Bell Work
The mountain has an elevation of 2,298 ft.
The valley has a depth of -224 ft. What is
the difference?
Draw and label picture before solving.
4. Quantity
What does this
word mean to
you?
This word actually
means…..
total value of a
given group or
specific amount.
Examples…
Explain how
you would use
this word in
math.
Lesson
• N2K: SPI 0706.2.5 Solve contextual
problems that involve operations with
integers
• N2K 1
• Critical Thinking Activity
• 1. Sean has a checking account at USA Bank.
He deposited 3 checks, each for $202. He then
bought a new video game system for $499.
What integer best describes Sean’s current bank
account balance?
•
A) +$107
•
B) –$107
•
C) +$297
•
D) –$297
• 1. Denver, Colorado is called “The Mile High City”
because its elevation is 5280 feet above sea level.
Someone tells you that the elevation of Death Valley,
California is −282 feet.
• Is Death Valley located above or below sea level? Cite
evidence from the paragraph to justify your reasoning.
• How many feet higher is Denver than Death Valley?
Show your work.
• What would your elevation be if you were standing near
the ocean? Draw a picture of where you would be
standing in comparison to both Denver and Death Valley.
Exit / Closure
• What did you learn about today’s N2K?
• Do you have questions about the process?
Friday: Bell Work
• The man wrote 3 checks ($28.52, $14.38,
$31.21). The beginning checking account
balance was $423.57. What is his
remaining balance.
5. Coefficient
What does this
word mean to
you?

This word actually
means…..
the number that is
multiplied by the
variable in an algebraic
expression/equation.
Explain how
