CALL & GRANTS FOR PARTICIPANTS
The international association Reset-Dialogues on Civilizations is once again turning the
spotlight on Russia, this time in order to understand the origins, reasons and mechanisms of
the myths surrounding President Vladimir Putin on whom significant international attention
and apprehension is now focused. After a first meeting in Berlin in 2015, and a second
meeting held on March 31st-April 1st 2016 in Washington in collaboration with the George
Washington Univesrity, Reset-DoC is organizing a conference on “The State and Political
Discourse in Today‟s Russia” to be held in Venice (June 17th – 18th, 2016). Organised by
Reset-DoC in cooperation with top American, European and Russian universities and the
participation of renowned international scholars, this conference will shed light on several
pressing questions about Putin and „his‟ Russia (see the program below).

ENROLLMENT:
NO GRANT REQUEST (Deadline June 10th, 2016)
In order to register to the conference, participants are requested to send an e-mail to
[email protected] by June 10th
or
WITH GRANT REQUEST (Deadline May 15th , 2016)
The conveners will provide small grants (from 250 to 500 euro, depending on the place of
residence) to ease the participation of PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and junior
faculty. Interested people are pleased to send their application by May 15th to
[email protected] The application should include:

a curriculum vitae;
a motivation letter;
one reference letter.
Applicants are noticed on the result of the evaluation committee by the 30th of May 2016.
Granted participants are required to attend all the program 17-18 June.
The grant will be delivered on Saturday the 18th of June, in cash.
Certificate of Attendance:
Registered applicants who attend the whole two-days Conference will receive a Certificate of
Attendance.
If you wish to attend single sessions, you may register at the conference hall entrance.

USEFUL INFORMATION FOR AN ENJOYABLE STAY IN VENICE
Location: the conference is held at the Fondazione Cini, located on the Island of San Giorgio
Maggiore, Venice, across the Canal from St. Mark's square and Palazzo Ducale
Travel and Accommodation: speakers and participants are responsible for their own travel
and accommodation expenses. Students must arrange their accommodation personally.
A room near Santa Lucia Train Station may be a suitable option since from Ferrovia Stop
(in front of Santa Lucia train station, 5 minutes walking from here) you can reach directly
San Giorgio Island with vaporetto line n°2 in 45 minutes.
Also a room near “Zattere” or “Zitelle” vaporetto stop may be a good option since you can
reach directly San Giorgio Island with vaporetto line n°2 in 10 minutes.

10:30 am – 1.00 pm - Session 1. The State Political Discourse
The first session will explore the possible existence of a multiplicity of political discourses
associated with the contemporary Russian state and its various organs. It will discuss the
plurality and fluidity allowed within the state political language, the relationship between the
Party, the presidential administration, the bureaucracies, media structures, and the different
places of ideological production and the role played by scholars and other intellectuals.

The second session will discuss the main ideological constructs promoted by the current
Russian state, their relation to similar notions existing in the West in terms of mutual
influences, adaptations, imitation or rejection and the possible existence of “sacred” topics
closed for discussion, besides the purity of the victory in WWII and the Orthodox Legacy.

9.15-11.15 pm - Session 3. The Demise of Liberalism: Testing the Waters on the
Subject
The session will focus on Russian notions of Liberalism and its demise and will explore the
possible existence of a multiplicity of „liberalisms‟ in contemporary Russia, the influence of
the Soviet experience, perestroika and the early 1990s on Russian notions of liberalism, the
impact of Western liberal domestic and foreign policies on Russia‟s liberal ideas and
expectations and vice versa as well as the role of the remaining institutions and actors
promoting political, economic, and constitutional liberalism.
