ἐπίγεια, ὅτι ἐποίησε κράτος, ἐν βραχίονι αὐτοῦ, ὁ
Κύριος· ἐπάτησε τῷ θανάτῳ τὸν θάνατον·

inheritance, granting victory to the faithful over the
enemy, and by Your Cross protecting Your common‐
wealth.

Today marks the crowning of our salvation and
the revelation of the mystery before all ages. For
the Son of God becomes the son of the Virgin,
and Gabriel proclaims the grace. Wherefore, we
also cry out with him, "Hail, O full of grace, the
Lord is with you.

Ἀδελφοί, ἔχοντες Ἀρχιερέα μέγαν διεληλυθότα
τοὺς οὐρανούς, Ἰησοῦν τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ,
κρατῶμεν τῆς ὁμολογίας. Οὐ γὰρ ἔχομεν ἀρχιερέα
μὴ δυνάμενον συμπαθῆσαι ταῖς ἀσθενείαις ἡμῶν,
πεπειρασμένον δὲ κατὰ πάντα καθ' ὁμοιότητα
χωρὶς ἁμαρτίας. Προσερχώμεθα οὖν μετὰ
παρρησίας τῷ θρόνῳ τῆς χάριτος, ἵνα λάβωμεν
ἔλεον καὶ χάριν εὕρωμεν εἰς εὔκαιρον βοήθειαν.
Πᾶς γὰρ Ἀρχιερεὺς ἐξ ἀνθρώπων λαμβανόμενος
ὑπὲρ ἀνθρώπων καθίσταται τὰ πρὸς τὸν Θεόν, ἵνα
προσφέρῃ δῶρά τε καὶ θυσίας ὑπὲρ ἁμαρτιῶν·
μετριοπαθεῖν δυνάμενος τοῖς ἀγνοοῦσι καὶ
πλανωμένοις, ἐπεὶ καὶ αὐτὸς περίκειται ἀσθένειαν·
καὶ διὰ ταύτην ὀφείλει, καθὼς περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ, οὕτω

Εὐαγγέλιον
Brethren, since we have a high priest who has
passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God,
let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a
high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been
tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with
confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that
we may receive mercy and find grace to help in
time of need. For every high priest chosen from
among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in
relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.
He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward,
since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of
this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as
well as for those of the people. And one does not
take the honor upon himself, but he is called by
God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt
himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed
by him who said to him, "Thou art my Son, today I
have begotten thee"; as he says also in another
place, "Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of
Melchizedek."

ἀκολουθεῖν, ἀπαρνησάσθω ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἀράτω τὸν
σταυρὸν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀκολουθείτω μοι. ὃς γὰρ ἂν
θέλῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ σῶσαι, ἀπολέσει αὐτήν· ὃς
δ' ἂν ἀπολέσῃ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ψυχὴν ἕνεκεν ἐμοῦ καὶ
τοῦ εὐαγγελίου, οὗτος σώσει αὐτήν. τί γὰρ
ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν κερδήσῃ τὸν κόσμον
ὅλον, καὶ ζημιωθῇ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ; ἢ τί δώσει
ἄνθρωπος ἀντάλλαγμα τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ; ὃς γὰρ

The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after
me, let him deny himself and take up his cross
and follow me. For whoever would save his life
will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake
and the gospel's will save it. For what does it
profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit
his life? For what can a man give in return for his
life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my
words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of
him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when
he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy

βασιλείαν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐληλυθυῖαν ἐν δυνάμει.
angels." And he said to them, "Truly, I say to you,
there are some standing here who will not taste
death before they see the kingdom of God come
with power."
Sunday of the Adoration of the Holy Cross
The commemoration and ceremonies of the Third
Sunday of Lent are closely parallel to the feasts of the Exal‐
tation of the Cross (September 14) and the Procession of
the Cross (August 1). Not only does the Sunday of the
Holy Cross prepare us for commemoration of the Cruci‐
fixion, but it also reminds us that the whole of Lent is a
period when we are crucified with Christ. As we have
“crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Gala‐
tians 5:24), and will have mortified ourselves during these
forty days of the Fast, the precious and life-giving Cross is
now placed before us to refresh our souls and encourage
us who may be filled with a sense of bitterness, resent‐
ment, and depression. The Cross reminds us of the Pas‐
sion of our Lord, and by presenting to us His example, it
encourages us to follow Him in struggle and sacrifice, be‐
ing refreshed, assured, and comforted. In other words, we
must experience what the Lord experienced during His
Passion - being humiliated in a shameful manner. The
Cross teaches us that through pain and suffering we shall
see the fulfillment of our hopes: the heavenly inheritance
and eternal glory.
As they who walk on a long and hard way and are
bowed down by fatigue find great relief and strengthening
under the cool shade of a leafy tree, so do we find
comfort, refreshment, and rejuvenation under the Lifegiving Cross, which our Fathers “planted” on this Sunday.
Thus, we are fortified and enabled to continue our Lenten
journey with a light step, rested and encouraged.

Or, as before the arrival of the king, his royal stan‐
dards of victory come in procession and then the king
himself appears in a triumphant parade, rejoicing in his
victory and filling those under him with joy, so does the
Feast of the Cross precede the coming of our King, Jesus
Christ. It warns us that He is about to proclaim His victo‐
ry over death and appear to us in the glory of the Resur‐
rection. His Life-Giving Cross is His royal scepter, and by
venerating it we are filled with joy, rendering Him glory.
Therefore, we become ready to welcome our King, who
shall triumph over the powers of darkness.
The present feast has been placed in the middle of
Great Lent for another reason. The Fast can be likened to
the spring of Marah whose waters the children of Israel
encountered in the wilderness. This water was undrink‐
able due to its bitterness but became sweet when the
Holy Prophet Moses dipped the wood into its depth.
Likewise, the wood of the Cross sweetens the days of the
Fast, which are bitter and often grievous because of our
tears. Yet Christ comforts us during our course through
the desert of the Fast, guiding and leading us by His hand
to the spiritual Jerusalem on high by the power of His
Resurrection. Moreover, as the Holy Cross is called the
Tree of Life, it is placed in the middle of the Fast, as the
ancient tree of life was placed in the middle of the garden
of Eden. By this, our Holy Fathers wished to remind us of
Adam’s gluttony as well as the fact that through this Tree
has condemnation been abolished.

Ὁ Ὅσιος Νικήτας ὁ Ὁμολογητής
Ὁ Ὅσιος Νικήτας καταγόταν ἀπὸ τὴν Καισάρεια
τῆς Βιθυνίας καὶ ἔζησε τὸν 8ο αἰῶνα μ.Χ. Σὲ βρεφικὴ
ἡλικία ἔμεινε ὀρφανὸς ἀπὸ μητέρα καὶ τὴν ἀνατροφή
του τὴν ἀνέλαβαν ἡ ἐνάρετη γιαγιά του καὶ ὁ εὐσεβὴς
Φιλάρετος, ὁ πατέρας του, ὁ ὁποῖος ἀνέθεσε ἀπὸ πολὺ
νωρὶς τὴν ἐκπαίδευσή του σὲ κάποιο κληρικὸ
φημισμένο γιὰ τὶς παιδαγωγικὲς καὶ πνευματικές του
ἀρετές. Ἔτσι ὁ νεαρὸς Νικήτας ἀπόκτησε ἀξιόλογη
κοσμικὴ καὶ πνευματικὴ παιδεία. Ἀφοῦ ἐγκατέλειψε
πατέρα, μητέρα, ἀδελφούς, ἀδελφές, συγγενεῖς, σπίτι,
πατρίδα, πλούτη καὶ σήκωσε τὸν σταυρό του μὲ
προθυμία, ἀκολούθησε τὸν Χριστὸ καὶ ἔγινε ἄξιος
μαθητὴς αὐτοῦ. Σὲ νεαρὴ ἡλικία κατέφυγε στὴν
περίφημη μονὴ τοῦ Μηδικίου τῆς Τριγλίας, ὅπου
γρήγορα, γιὰ τὶς πολλές του ἀρετές, κατάκτησε τὴν
ἀγάπη καὶ τὴν ἐκτίμηση ὅλων τῶν ἀδελφῶν τῆς

μονῆς, οἱ ὁποῖοι μετὰ τὸν θάνατο τοῦ ἡγουμένου
Νικηφόρου, τὸν ἐξέλεξαν ἡγούμενο τῆς μονῆς, ἐπὶ
Πατριάρχου Ταρασίου (784 – 806 μ.Χ.). Λόγω τῆς
σταθερῆς πίστεώς του στὴν διδασκαλία καὶ παράδοση
τῆς Ἐκκλησίας μας γιὰ τὶς ἱερὲς εἰκόνες ὁ Ὅσιος
ἐξορίσθηκε, ἐπὶ αὐτοκράτορα Λέοντος τοῦ Ε’ (813 –
820 μ.Χ.), στὴν κωμόπολη Μασαλεὼν τῆς Μικρᾶς
Ἀσίας. Ἀπὸ ἐκεῖ ἀνακλήθηκε γιὰ νὰ ἐξορισθεῖ ἐκ νέου,
τὸ 815 μ.Χ., στὴ νῆσο τῆς Ἁγίας Γλυκερίας κοντὰ στὸν
Ἀκρίτα. Ἐπανέκαμψε στὴν Κωνσταντινούπολη ἐπὶ
βασιλέως Μιχαὴλ τοῦ Τραυλοῦ (820 – 829 μ.Χ.) καὶ
ἐγκαταστάθηκε σὲ κάποιο μετόχι στὸ βόρειο τμῆμα τῆς
πόλεως, τὸ ὁποῖο πιθανῶς ἀνῆκε στὴ μονὴ Πελεκητῆς.

WELCOMETOALLVISITORS: For those visiting an Orthodox Church for the first time, please be
aware that Holy Communion is a sign of unity of faith which is only offered to Baptized or Chrismated Orthodox Christians. All present are welcome, however, to partake of the antidoro (blessed bread)
which is distributed at the end of the service. Those interested in learning more about the Orthodox
Christian faith, please feel free to see Fr. Demetri after the service. This week, to assist you in the

Please join us for fellowship immediately following the Liturgy in the Anastasia and Spiro Davis

GREEK INDEPENDENCE PARADE: Today, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios of Boston will
preside the Divine Liturgy. Orthros at 8:30 am and Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am. The Greek Parade will be held in downtown Boston. Let all of us participate and celebrate together the anniversary of our Greek Independence Day. Immediately after the Divine Liturgy, you can board
the bus in the parking lot of the Cathedral, which will take us to the parade and back to the

CATHEDRALTOHOSTLOCALPARISHES: On Wednesday, April 6, at 6:00 pm we will host neighboring parishes at the Presanctified Liturgy at the Cathedral Chapel in Brookline followed by a Lenten
meal and lecture on theme from Great Lent and Holy Week.
SALUTATIONS: The Fourth Salutations will be celebrated on Friday, April 8, at 7:00 pm at the Cathedral on Parker Street. Join us as we celebrate the Annunciation on the fourth of five Friday’s of Lent.

ΚΑΛΩΣOΡΙΣΜΑ: Για όσους επισκέπτονται την Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία για πρώτη φορά, θα πρέπει να
γνωρίζουν ότι η Θεία Κοινωνία είναι το σύμβολο της ενότητας της πίστεως, το οποίο
προσφέρεται μόνο σε όσους έχουν βαπτιστεί ή χριστεί Ορθόδοξοι Χριστιανοί. Όλοι οι
παρευρισκόμενοι ωστόσο, είναι ευπρόσδεκτοι να λάβουν το Αντίδωρο (ή ευλογημένο ψωμί), το
οποίο διανέμεται μετά το τέλος της Θείας Λειτουργίας. Όσοι ενδιαφέρεστε να μάθετε
περισσότερα για την Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική Πίστη, μη διστάσετε να μιλήσετε στον Πατέρα
Δημήτριο μετά την Θεία Λειτουργία. Αυτή την εβδομάδα θα βοηθήσουν στο Παγκάρι: George

κ.κ. Μεθόδιος θα προεξάρχει της Θείας Λειτουργίας. Όρθρος στις 8:30 πμ και Θεία Λειτουργία
στις 10:00 πμ. Αμέσως μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία, θα γίνει στο κέντρο της Βοστώνης η
καθιερωμένη Παρέλαση για τον Εορτασμό της 25ης Μαρτίου. Ευελπιστούμε όπως όλοι
παρευρεθείτε για να συνεορτάσουμε την επέτειο της Εθνικής μας Παλιγγενεσίας. Μπορείται να
χρησιμοποιήσετε το λεωφορείο που θα ευρίσκεται έξω από τον Καθεδρικό Ναό, και το οποίο θα
σας κατεβάσει στο κέντρο της Βοστώνης για να παρακολουθήσετε την παρέλαση και θα σας

ΦΙΛΟΞΕΝΕΙΑ ΤΟΠΙΚΩΝ ΚΟΙΝΟΤΗΤΩΝ: Η Προηγιασμένη Θεία Λειτουργία θα εορταστεί την
Τετάρτη, 6 Απριλίου στο Παρεκκλήσι του Καθεδρικού Ναού στο Μπρουκλάϊν, στις 6:00 μμ,
όπου θα φιλοξενήσουμε τις γειτονικές κοινότητες. Μετά τη Θεία Λειτουργία θα προσφερθεί
Νηστίσιμο γεύμα και αμέσως μετά θα ακολουθήσει Διάλεξη σχετική με τη νηστεία.
