THIRD SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT—VENERATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
Our Holy Father Nikitas the Confessor, Hegumen of the Midikios Monastery.
Apolytikion of the Precious an Life-giving Holy Cross
Lord, save Your people and bless Your inheritance, granting victories to the faithful against
enemies, and protecting your domain by the power of Your Cross.
Apolytikion of the Third Tone
Let the Heavens rejoice; let the earthly things be glad; for the Lord has wrought might with
His arm, He has trampled upon death by death. The first-born of the dead has He become.
From the belly of Hades He has delivered us, and has granted to the world great mercy.
Apolytikion of the Holy Taxiarchs
Supreme Commanders of the heavenly armies, we the unworthy implore you, that by your supplications you encircle us under the cover of the wings of
your ineffable glory; guarding us who bow down with fervor crying: Deliver us from dangers,
as Leaders of the Powers above.
Apolytikion of St. Haralambos
As a pillar unshakable of the Church of Christ, and an ever-radiant lamp to the universe, were
you, O wise Haralambos; you illumined the world through martyrdom; you dispelled the moonless night of the idols, o blessed one. Therefore with boldness before Christ, intercede that we
may be saved.
ΚΟΝΤΑΚΙΟΝ ΤΗΣ ΗΜΕΡΑΣ – KONTAKION OF THE DAY
To the triumphant leader, victory; To the deliverer from sufferings, thanksgiving, I your city,
attribute to you, Theotokos. But as having invincible power, from all kinds of dangers free me to
cry out to you: Rejoice, Bride unwedded.
(In place of “Holy God”:)
Your Cross we venerate, Master, and your holy Resurrection we glorify.

ABOUT THE NOURISHMENT OF THE SOUL
"I am the Bread of Life " (St. John 6:48).
Thus spoke the Lord Jesus to the hungry generation of man. This word was realized
throughout the centuries to the numerous followers of Christ who received the Lord as
the nourishment of their souls. A desperate young man who was close to suicide confessed to a spiritual father. The spiritual father listened to him carefully and said to
him: "My son, you are to blame for your misfortune. Your soul is starved to death.
Throughout your entire life, you learned only how to nourish your body but you never
thought that the soul requires nourishment; greater and more often than that which
the body needs. Your soul is at the point of death from hunger. My son, partake of and
drink Christ [Holy Communion]. Only that can restore your soul from death. Daily
and continually partake and drink of Christ. He is the Life-creating Bread of our
souls." The young man listened to the elder and returned to life.
Brethren, let us nourish our soul with Christ so that our soul may be alive and healthy.
Let us continually nourish our mind with Christ's thoughts so that our mind might be
enlightened and clear. Let us continually nourish our heart with the love of Christ so
that our heart might be full and joyful. Let us continually nourish our will with the
commandments of Christ and the example of Christ so that our will, every minute,
might perform good deeds. Let Christ's thoughts be our thoughts and Christ's love our
love and Christ's good will our good will. Let us continually nourish our souls with
Christ the Lord; with our soul let us continually partake of Him and drink Him!
There is no more nourishing Bread than He; there is no sweeter drink than He. In Holy
Communion, He gives Himself completely to us: Body and Blood. But, Holy Communion is a warning that our souls must continually be nourished by Him; continually
partake of Him and drink of Him just as we continually breathe. O, our God and
Sweet Lord, stir our souls that they be continually nourished by You and remain alive.
You are our Bread of Life.
To You be glory and thanks always. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
The St. Haralambos Pre-School PTA invites you for LOUKOUMATHES
at today’s our Coffee Fellowship Hour after church services.
NO MEMORIAL SERVICES ARE SCHEDULED TODAY
Memorial services are offered for the eternal rest of persons who have fallen asleep in the Lord. There
are some days when Memorials are not permitted—please call the church office before planning.
Memorials take place at 40 days, at 6 months, at 1 year and at 3 years. After three years have passed,
the departed are more properly remembered on the Saturdays of the Souls.
Please also remember that we have discontinued the custom of placing candles in the kolyva.
ROW BY ROW—When you come forward to
receive Holy Communion, please let the ushers
direct you. Because many people will receive the
Holy Eucharistic today, the ushers will ask you to
approach the Holy Chalice row by row in order to
have a more peaceful and spirit-filled experience.
Thank you.
WHO CAN RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION?
— Because receiving Holy Communion or any
other Sacrament is an expression of our acceptance of the dogmatic and moral teachings of
the Orthodox Faith, only Orthodox Christians (by
baptism or chrismation) in good standing may
participate. For this reason, persons who do not
agree with these teachings, or not in good standing
(for example, married outside the church, or unmarried but sexually active, or civilly divorced but
not ecclesiastically divorced), must return to good
standing in order to participate in Orthodox Sacraments such as Holy Communion and Unction.
This is also the reason that Orthodox Christians do
not receive sacraments in non-Orthodox churches.
HOLY CONFESSION—It is customary to receive the Sacrament of Holy Confession during
Lent. This can be done by appointment with Fr.
Dean. We urge you to schedule your confession
as soon as possible; please do not wait until Holy
Week!
HELP SAVE A LIFE!
Joanne Filina, of Greek descent, is a 42 year old
wife and mother of two with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. A bone marrow transplant is her
only chance for life. Maybe you have the bloodtype that could save her life!
NEXT SUNDAY, April 10, after church services,
we will conduct a Marrow Donor Registry. If you
are willing to help Joanne, please stop at the sample booth. All that is needed is a q-tip swab of
your cheek! There is no charge, and with your
help, we may perform a life-saving miracle!
Thank you!
OUTREACH COMMITTEE–VOLUNTEERS

more details. Volunteers arrive at Bessie's Table

PM. This is an excellent close-to-home opportunity to help those who are less fortunate than we are.
Our next service date is Monday, April 25.
THE ANNUAL GREEK PARADE will take
place on Sunday, April 17. Plan to march with our
Saint Haralambos community!
ANNOUNCING…THE FIRST ANNUAL ST HARALAMBOS LAMB ROAST COMPETITION!
Who can roast the best lamb? We will have a competition to see who roasts the best lamb on Bright
Saturday, May 7 at St. Haralambos. There is a $50 fee to enter the competition and each team will provide its own lamb, spices and cooking method. If you just want to eat instead of cooking, you can buy a
ticket to sample the various entries, enjoy a full dinner and music, and have a fun-filled evening! To
enter the competition, please call the church office and leave a message for Ted Karabatsos or Tom
Kanelos so that we can send more information and instructions!
STEWARDSHIP 2016!
προσωπικά;
Τι σου προσφέρει η εκκλησία σου;
τις ανάγκες σου;
που αποκομίζεις από την εκκλησία σου;
δραστηριότητές της και προγράμματά της;

STEWARDSHIP 2016!
 What does your church mean to you?
 What does your church offer to you?
 What keeps the doors open to serve your
needs?
 How important is Baptism, Holy Communion,
forgiveness and the many other blessings you
derive from your church?
 What gives the church the “fuel” to power its
activities and programs?
ANSWER: Your STEWARDSHIP!
These are the questions we should ask when we
determine our level of stewardship every year!
Everyone should have a different stewardship
level from everyone else, and every year it
should change according to our means and our
love! Our stewardship level should be an amount
that reflects our growing love of God and our
appreciation for the blessings and benefits we
derive from our Church.
If you have not yet made your 2016 commitments, please do so. There is no minimum, but
true stewardship means giving in proportion to
our resources and income.

Hebrews 4:14-5:6
BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high
priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every
respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find
grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is
appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices
for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is
beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own
sins as well as for those of the people. And one does not take the honor upon
himself, but he is called by God, just as Aaron was. So also Christ did not exalt
himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him,
"Thou art my Son, today I have begotten thee"; as he says also in another place,
"Thou art a priest for ever, after the order of Melchizedek."
GOSPEL READΙΝG
Mark 8:34-9:1
The Lord said: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself and
take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it;
and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what
does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a
man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words
in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be
ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." And
he said to them, "Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not
taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power."
