Part of the problem I had with this book was the occasional odd turn of phrase or weird choice
of words. It was a small problem that should probably be attributed to the translator, but it still
threw me off on several occasions.
But mostly it was the pacing that kept this book from being truly good. I found my interest
waxing and waning throughout the book, generally due to Manfredi's honorable but misplaced
desire to provide his readers with historical context. I love history, so that in and of itself is no
problem, but certain passages felt clunky and unnecessary. Mixed with the fact that he often
jumped years at a time in the space of a page, it made for an uneven read. The ending left
something to be desired as well.
Like I said, not a bad read. It was an interesting bit of fiction peppered with historical events. But
I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't looking for more.

Maharet: Valerio Massimo Manfredi è sicuramente un uomo molto, molto colto e i suoi libri
hanno il pregio di rendere fruibili a grandi masse eventi della storia antica di cui difficilmente si
sente parlare fuori dalle aule scolastiche: mi piaceva tanto il suo programma “Impero”, lo
trovavo interessante, coinvolgente, ben strutturato e lo guardavo sempre con piacere.
Non ho ritrovato quel piacere in questo libro: l'ho trovato noioso, insipido e scritto neanche
troppo bene; già io non sono una grande amante della storia antica, che anche a scuola mi
piaceva davvero poco, ma qui davvero mi sono annoiata.
Lo stile di Manfredi non mi coinvolgeva, né nelle parti descrittive che si protraevano ben più del
necessario spesso e volentieri, né nei dialoghi, spesso abbastanza insulsi e quasi imbarazzanti.
I continui salti da un punto di vista e da un avvenimento all'altro poi spesso mi confondevano e
mi irritavano, è un modo di scrivere che proprio non mi piace.
I personaggi non avevano profondità e non venivano indagati granché, non mi appassionavo
alle loro vicende, non provavo interesse nel sapere cosa sarebbe successo dopo e continuavo il
libro quasi per inerzia, giusto perché era corto e tanto valeva finirlo; il finale aperto poi non mi ha
proprio convinto, sembrava quasi un modo per tenersi aperta una porticina per un eventuale
seguito.
E' comunque un libro scorrevole e, in certi punti, interessante, diverse cose della società
spartana che mi erano un po' confuse ora mi sono più chiare, ma a parte questo salvo davvero
poco e non credo leggerò altro di Manfredi.
Peccato, perché le premesse erano interessanti.
