Paul Eckert: Stephen King must be one of the best writers at taking an ordinary situation and
making an interesting story out of it. Give the guy a person and a problem and he will just run
with it. He's often typecast as the king of horror, but I think some of his best stories don't involve
the supernatural.
In the case of Roadwork, Barton Dawes is a regular Joe Suburbanite, just another guy trying to
make an honest living when he gets notice that the city will be invoking eminent domain and
tearing down his neighborhood in order to build a pointless freeway overpass. For Barton, this
feels like his life is being ripped apart, and instead of stepping aside and letting it happen, he
decides to do something about it.
The story is an obvious metaphor for the futility of fighting against an unstoppable force, but
fighting nonetheless. But more than that, the story has a lot of heart. There is little obvious
plotting going on, and the fact that the chapters are days from the calendar give a real sense
that these are just singular days from a man's life, and hidden inside them are the seeds for his
later actions.
Another win for Stephen King in my book.
I listened to the audiobook version of this story. The narrator was quite good on all the male
voices and the prose in general, but his female voices tended toward stereotype, as if all
females either talk like John Travolta in Hairspray or like some teenage California valley girl.

romanzo. Certo è che compì un passo falso che rivelò la sua identità oppure la cosa era volta
per aggiungere successo e gossip alla fama che già possedeva. Comunque, sicuramente ha
saputo far parlare di sé e questo romanzo, come gli altri pubblicati con lo stesso pseudonimo,
hanno ottenuto milioni di ristampe.
Certo è che in USCITA PER L'INFERNO manca quel tocco di soprannaturale che gli è proprio,
ma sono presenti altri elementi narrativi e stilistici che lo contraddistinguono. Nonostante tutto
questo romanzo non sempre si legge con piacere e, per alcuni capitoli risulta anche
notevolmente noioso e privo di ritmo. Non è sicuramente da includersi nella rosa dei migliori di
Stephen King.

straight insight into life), the other two being Rage by Bachman and The Killer Inside Me by Jim
Thompson. Though I liked Rage a lot - Roadwork wrung my heart just a little bit tighter. The
breakdown of the facade that people like to live behind, for a lovable, easy going husband,
seems so very probable, given the pressures and expectations in today's world. Loneliness is
not something wished away by having a loving partner or a good friend - it is a monster of the
dark that creeps up behind you and grabs you by your neck and never leaves hold of you till you
and the monster both are destroyed. It broke my heart to see the world from George's eye. The
novel makes you see the broken dreams and dashed hopes just beneath the veneer of
"progress" and "prosperity" that society so proudly wears as its royal cloak. Thank you Stephen
King for creating Richard Bachman and giving me a rage-tinted view of the world, which at times
helps me see that life sometimes bites - and bites hard.
