Description
An idyllic village is thrown into turmoil in the startling, heart-racing new thriller from the author of
Sacrifice.
How did it all begin? I suppose it would be the day I rescued a new-born baby from a poisonous
snake, heard the news of my mother’s death and encountered my first ghost . . .
Veterinary surgeon Clara Benning is young and intelligent, but practically a recluse. Disfigured
by a childhood accident, she lives alone and shies away from human contact whenever
possible. But when a man dies following a supposed snake bite, the victim’s post mortem
shows a higher concentration of venom than could ever be found in a single snake.
Assisted by her softly spoken neighbour, and an eccentric reptile expert, Clara unravels sinister
links to a barbaric ancient ritual, an abandoned house and a fifty-year-old tragedy that left the
survivors fiercely secretive. Then the village’s inventive attacker strikes again, and Clara’s own
solitary existence is brutally invaded.
For someone the truth must remain buried in the past — even if they have to kill to keep it there.
Insightful reviews
Rikke: Another S.J Bolton book I loved!
This book gave me countless nightmares about snakes. Either I was bitten, or someone I loved
was.
I even woke up crying one night because I dreamed my beloved cat had been bitten and killed
by a Australian snake. LOL.
I love when a fiction book can get under your skin like that...
Once again S.J wrote without a single doll or boring moment, and the pages turns themself.
I love her characthers, - Claire is wonderfull and you feel for her instanly, at the same time as
being so curious to find out why her face is scared.
I fell stalker in love with Sean North myself. (Christian Grey go home, Sean North is a real man!
)
Can't wait to read more of this Author.
Dear S.J Bolton, pleaser never ever stop writing!! :)
Alyssa: This is what I think anyone who can make me actually really like a book about snakes,
is a pretty fascinating author!! I did tend to get a little annoyed in the beginning with the amount
of self-hate clara expressed, but I got over it because I wanted to know why she was scarred,
and it was worth it! Most of the time it is pretty easy to figure out suspense novels or if not, it's
because they don't really make sense anyways but I never would have ever guessed the ending
of this book! I was pleasantly surprised and I love that along the way I learned so many
interesting facts! Also I think this would be a really fantastic movie that i would be way too
creeped out to ever watch!
stupenda"
Ecco, insomma.. So che non è da me ma: "Più love story! Più love story! Più love story!!!!" :D
In tanti mi hanno incoraggiata a sperare in un futuro normale. "Non tutti gli uomini hanno
l'ossessione dell'aspetto fisico, Clara" mi sono sentita dire. "Incontrerai qualcuno che vedrà
quanto sei bella dentro".
Covo risentimento, come
mia sorella mi ricorda sempre. Sono dolorosamente timida, permanentemente irritata,
ossessivamente ripiegata su me stessa (?)
Janebbooks: In a way, S. J. Bolton's moment released novel AWAKENING is a coming-of-age
story. The protag and narrator of the story is a reclusive flora and fauna veterinarian, Clara
Benning, single daughter of an archdeacon. She practices in a distant British village and prefers
her mute swans and child owl chicks to people. yet a number of invasions of snakes into the
village and the demise of 3 outdated people, as soon as parishioners of a church burned to the
floor fifty years prior, switch her life.Additionally, the unconventional is a fundamental gothic
crime thriller. it really is no twist of fate that Bolton was once dubbed the "high priestess of rural
gothic crime" in Harrogate the summer season of 2011. Her 3rd novel Blood Harvest was once
shortlisted for the Theakston outdated Peculier secret of the year, an award given merely to
British and Irish crime writers. Bolton was once the one woman author nominated. all of the
gothic parts are richly designated in AWAKENiNG:An remoted British village "creeping with
snakes and mystery." An deserted and old, rambling residence, Witcher House. A burned
skeleton of a church by no means rebuilt.A disfigured female. during this novel, the narrator
herself with a facet of her face scarred by means of a horrendous formative years accident.Old
relatives secrets. The four, might be 5 Witcher brothers, as soon as pillars of the community.
unusual non secular rituals fifty years in the past at a church, burned and not restored...a
Church of the Latter Rain.A trace of romance. either a sort neighbor and a television superstar
and famous herpetologist befriend Clara. And snakes. As in different novels, Bolton has good
researched the opposite villains of this story...snakes. She lists 5 tomes of snake technological
know-how within the acknowlegements besides a different thanks to the curator of decrease
vertebrates and invertebrates on the Chester Zoo. She additionally imagines a unbelievable
grass snake swarm in chilling prose:"How top to explain what occurred next? It used to be
notwithstanding I have been in the middle of a wide, quick river. Water was once speeding in
the direction of me, ebbing and swirling sometimes but...flowing relently onwards...a box of windblown grass. I watched that circulate of - water...grass...what on the earth was once it? - coming
in the direction of me.Snakes...dozens of them...maybe hundreds. They have been rippling in
the course of the lengthy grass like ribbons flowing from a kid's streamer. Their our bodies
gleamed slick and wet, shining within the moonlight. They moved over the land with a collective
purpose...It used to be a grass-snake swarm. younger snakes, narrow as pencils, moved along
adults over 5 ft long. I observed darkish snakes, faded snakes, may possibly even make out the
markings on their backs...It was once beautiful, extraordinary; relatively wonderful..."
(219-220)Bolton's imaginitive prose is beautiful, outstanding and wonderful, too. She is certainly
the excessive priestess of recent gothic crime.
Jenn: What a strange book. i am nonetheless unsure no matter if it used to be a stand by myself
novel or no matter if there's extra to benefit in regards to the scar confronted vet. And who used
to be that Rachel girl? Why does she by no means ask Matt who she was? there have been
huge items of descriptions during this novel that truly did not must be there. at nighttime with
craggy rocks is ready as a lot description as I need. and do not question me why i assumed this
used to be a police procedural. that are supposed to educate me to learn the again first ahead
of delving correct in. I throughly loved the 1st 3/4 of the book, however the final sector left
anything to be desired.
Elaine: This started out tremendous well, and had me hooked in the first 10 pages-not a nasty
achievement. but it flagged quite in the direction of the middle-and the realization was once no
longer obvious, yet quite effortless to paintings out. So no nice surprises with the plot. The
protagonist-Clara-really controlled to carry the plot together-some type of solidarity used to be
necessary, and the plot by myself did not suffice on that score. Clara is a natural world vet,
whose speciality is snakes-particularly of the massive and venomous type! She had a sad
childhood, which led to her being facially badly disfigured, and on account of this was once
virtually reclusive-certainly in her deepest life, and so far as attainable in her specialist life. I felt
large empathy for her, and might fortunately have learn it easily as a singular targeting her lifethere used to be lots of scope for this to be feasible. In contrast, the broad canvas of male
characters turn out to be quite unappealing-if now not downright unbelievable. Even the
enigmatic Sean isn't really built with something just about his complete potential-such a pity!By
introducing "swarming" snakes into the village community, the radical wanders around, at risk of
wasting itself completely.I used to be to learn information about the snakes (despite being
scared of them, so i've got no proposal what drew me to this novel-the cover, dare I ponder?!)I
don't know how exact the main points at the snakes are, yet see no cause to imagine that
they're something lower than accurate, which can have laid an exceptional premise for the
book. yet sadly, it really misplaced it really is way-by attempting to be too
frightening/spectacular, perhaps-when the bones of the plot have been truly tragic of their
personal right. could similar to to work out one other novel which dwelt on Clara's early life-that
might doubtless transpire to be really frightening.
