The dating of the Phaedrus has been hotly debated: sometimes it has been counted among
Plato's earliest works; sometimes with the dialogues of the 'middle' period (Phaedo,
Symposium, Republic); sometimes with the late works (e.g. Sophist, Statesman). The safest
and easiest hypothesis is that it stands somewhere between the latter two groups, in that it
displays themes and preoccupations in common with both. Love, knowledge and the Forms, the
nature and fate of the immortal soul: these are subjects familiar from the constructive middle
dialogues; on the other hand, the discussion which frames Socrates' treatment of them, about
the relationship between rhetoric and philosophy, about the value of writing, and about
methodology, can in many respects plausibly be linked with the approach of the later and more
critical dialogues. In modern times the Phaedrus has been relatively neglected; yet the rich
mixture of its themes, and the consequent variations of style and tempo, make it one of the
most rewarding parts of the Platonic corpus. This same variety is also the source of one of the
major problems affecting our understanding of the work; is it a real unity? If so, what are the

Jon: Plato at his most playful. First Socrates presents one argument about romantic love (in a
nutshell--that it's dangerous and not to be messed with), then professes to have changed his
mind and presents an extreme counter to his own argument, (that love is a reminder of our true
spiritual form and should be sought above all else). He finally reveals that he's just been
messing with Phaedrus in order to show him how unwieldy and unreliable the art of rhetoric can
be.
Ioan Suhov: Perhaps, it might be impossible to even try to present briefly this magnificent chefd'oeuvre of Plato.
In addition to being a true philosophical writing on "conditio umana", on the Good and the Bad,
on the meaning of life and so on, it also demolishes the idea of nowadays "Platonic love". As
pointed out by Wilamowitz at the beginning of the 20th century not only does Platon believes
that pure lust and love may, at some point lead to knowledge (but they have to be, afterwards,
controlled by a life of guarding "le juste milieu"), but he also states clear explanations in support
of his thesis , reason for which the term appears clearly misunderstood at present time.
But this is only a minor aspect of the writing. It is also a treaty on madness and the condition of
individuals who are out of the ordinary, them being classified into: the ones who foresee the
future, the ones who increase the mysteries of the worlds (convergence with Blaga, avant la
lettre or may I justly say: source of inspiration for the modern one), the poets and the erotic
ones.
Someway, after having read Plato's dialogue, all the writings of Nietzsche have become to
appear to myself as insignificant or even plagiarized. Indeed may I sound radical (and so am I,
of course), but there are definitely similitudes between the two authors as it should be between
two of the greatest philosophers of all times.
Remarkable? Yes! Well written, of course. Clearness of explaining the ideas - absolutely
magical. I finally seem to understand the reason for which the dialogue was preferred as
manner of writing in Greece.
To sum up, I may only add that, through the way in which it is written, this is one of those
philosophy books which targets not only specialists, but any readers following the imperative
"Noscete Impsum".
