Insightful reviews
David: A collection of short, impressionistic stories by the woman who famously pioneered the
stream of consciousness technique, and equally famously drowned herself by filling her pockets
with stones and walking into a lake.
Typical of her style is the following start and end paragraphs from the title story:
Whatever hour you woke there was a door shutting. From room to room they went, hand in
hand, lifting here, opening there, making sure – a ghostly couple.
‘Here we left it,’ she said. And he added, ‘Oh, but here too!’ ‘It’s upstairs,’ she murmured.
‘And in the garden,’ he whispered. ‘Quietly,’ they said, ‘or we shall wake them.’
...................................................
‘Safe, safe, safe,’ the heart of the house beats proudly. ‘Long years -’ he sighs. ‘Again you
found me.’ ‘Here,’ she murmurs, ‘sleeping; in the garden reading; laughing, rolling apples in
the loft. Here we left our treasure-Stooping, their light lifts the lid upon my eyes. ‘Safe! Safe!
Safe!’ the pulse of the house beats wildly. Waking, I cry ‘Oh, is this your buried treasure? The
light in the heart.’
When I bought this book many years ago I was disappointed because I expected a 'proper'
ghost story. But re-reading it now I realise that it really is a proper ghost story, and a heartrending one at that.
Greg Youmans: (I gather that my version of the book isn't the same one that some of the other
reviews here are referencing. Mine is a paperback with a different cover, published in 1949, and
features Leonard Woolf's selection of Virginia Woolf's stories made soon after her death.)
Many of the stories are wonderful. Stand outs for me are "Kew Gardens," "The Mark on the
Wall," "The New Dress," "Solid Objects," "Moments of Being" (aka "Slater's Pins Have No
Points"), and "A Summing Up."
The first six stories were originally published four years before Mrs. Dalloway (1925), and the
rest followed over the next few years. I read the collection in the light of that famous novel, as I
imagine most readers will. It is fascinating to see Woolf experiment with her stream-ofconsciousness form and style, first writing in the first person, then the third person; in a more
objective voice here, a far more focalized and subjective one there. A few of the stories include
characters from Mrs. Dalloway, even taking place at one of Clarissa's many parties. I loved
these, especially "The New Dress." Poor Mabel with her new dress, standing in the corner
feeling unfashionable, unsophisticated, unpretty, and beating herself up for feeling all those
things as she's feeling them:
"But it was all so paltry, weak-blooded, and petty-minded to care so much at her age with two
children, to be still so utterly dependent on people's opinions and not have principles or
convictions, not to be able to say as other people did, 'There's Shakespeare! There's death!
We're all weevils in a captain's biscuit'--or whatever it was that people did say."
I think Woolf nails human nature, and especially human vanity, in blazing moments like this.
There is a manic vibe to many of the stories: a guest at a society gathering is suddenly flooded
with communitas, only to have that bubble of fellow feeling just as suddenly burst into
disillusionment. And the irony of Woolf's treatment has the reader looking dubiously upon the
representation of interpersonal connection from the beginning.
From "Together and Apart," in which a man and a woman simply make small talk at a party for a
few minutes:
"Their eyes met; collided rather, for each felt that behind the eyes the secluded being, who sits
in darkness while his shallow agile companion does all the tumbling and beckoning, and keeps
the show going, suddenly stood erect; flung off his cloak; confronted the other. It was alarming;
it was terrific."
A lot of the stories remind me of the rise and fall of an ecstasy trip if it were distilled into one fiveminute flash of experience by a wealthy guest at a garden party. Such irrational highs, spurred
by a desperateness for connection. But, as Woolf writes in "A Summing Up," the final story in
the collection, "the soul...is by nature unmated, a widow bird." That seems to be the ultimate
tragedy, spurring everyone to keep going to parties that can never fill the emptiness.
The collection is not all gems, which can be great in the sense that it's great, for readers who
are writers, to see that a master doesn't always write masterfully.
Syd: Honestly, i have learn almost all these tales greater than once, and part the time i've got no
notion what is going on on. Woolf used her brief tales as cars to scan with assorted voices, and
it shows. i like those I do comprehend and as for the rest, i'm going to keep it up trying.
Laura: Greetings from Praha. a beautiful short-story through Virginia Woolf.
Solo in keeping with l. a. signora
Dalloway quel momento period compiuto; in keeping with los angeles signora Dalloway giugno
period frizzante.
penso “Camilla, los angeles mia amica, è molto bella”; penso “Camilla è molto bella”. Uno
