TECHNICAL DETAILS
LOCATION
Sinalunga has ancient origins: first Etruscan settlements ( localized in the villages of Carceri, Palazzetta and Aducello)
dating back to the VII-VIth centuries BC. In the Roman age (II century BC) settlements of considerable importance were
present in the area where today Pieve di Sinalunga is placed. Around the XIth century it began to assume its present
characterization; in this period the village belonged to the Cacciaconti, branch of Scialenga and Berardenga’s Counts.
During the 1300 it was a member of the SienaState and it was vicariate and, so, of Captaincy of justice. Due to its position
of border, Sinalunga underwent sieges and devastations that culminated with the demolition of Rocca ( made to erect by
Gian Galeazzo Visconti in the XIVth century) due to the action of Ferdinando I de Medici. He reduced the area to “public
walk” also today called “ Cassero” and he destined the materials to the building of Collegiata di San Martino (15881595).
By the second half of the XVIth century Sinalunga, by then included in the Tuscan grand duchy, was seat of a Captaincy
of Justice that extended its powers on Bettolle, Scrofiano, Farnetella, Rigomagno, Poggio Santa Cecilia, Serre di
Rapolano and Armaiolo.
At the beginning of XVIIIth century Gian Gastone dei Medici faces the problem of the marsh of the Valdichiana and
undertakes works of land reclamation, then continued by Lorena and completed in the second half of XVIIIth century
thanks to the Fossombroni, by the excavation of the channel of the Chiana, on commission of Grand Duke Pietro
Leopoldo. In 1867 Garibaldi was arrested by Italian police forces in the square dedicated to him today.
