Let’s play a game: let’s go through the letters of the alphabet and associate each one with a typical
characteristic of Blanc Mariclò’s shabby style. At the end, we’ll have put together a special Italian-English glossary of trends, accessories, colours, fabrics, atmospheres and decorative techniques
typical of this light-filled, informal and neo-Romantic style of furnishing.

Abat-jour s. m., fr. (propr. “smorza-luce”): lampada composta da una base e da un paralume, di solito
usata come punto luce sul comodino. La tendenza primavera-estate 2015 Blanc Mariclò la vuole con
una base chiara, preferibilmente di color avorio, e un paralume dalle forme sinuose oppure ornato
con volant e rouches, applicazioni a forma di cuore o di rosa, fiocchi che reggono e chiudono l’arricciatura dei modelli sfoderabili.
Abat-jour > Table lamp noun (from the French meaning “to soften the light”): lamp consisting of a base
and a lampshade, usually used as a bedside lamp. In the Blanc Mariclò spring-summer 2015 collection
they come with a light-coloured, preferably ivory base and a lampshade that can either be sleek, or decorated with frills and ruches, heart- or rose-shaped applications, or bows holding together the pleating on
the removable models.
Bianco s. m., [uso sostantivato dell’agg.] (pl. –chi): colore principe dell’arredamento shabby, è utilizzato per dare nuova luce ad ambienti e arredi. Applicato a pareti, porte, infissi e travi, rende gli spazi
più ampi e luminosi; usato per i mobili, rinnova l’aspetto dei pezzi vintage esaltandone la lavorazione
con una patina di bellezza imperfetta, dona versatilità agli elementi nuovi rendendoli perfettamente
abbinabili tanto ad arredi pre-esistenti quanto a diversi colori o fantasie di tendaggi e tappezzerie.
Bianco > White noun [adjective used as a noun] (pl. Whites): main colour of shabby furniture, it is used
to add light to the rooms and furniture. When applied to walls, doors, window frames and beams, it
makes the rooms bigger and fills them with light. When used on vintage furniture, it gives a new lease of
life, bringing out the craftsmanship with a finish of imperfect beauty. On new furniture, it gives that touch of versatility to fit in perfectly with existing furniture and with different colours or patterns of drapes
and upholstery.
Cièlo s.m. [dal lat. caelum; in grafia tarda coelum]: espressione mutuata dal francese ciel de lit, nel
linguaggio shabby indica quell’ornamento che, posizionato sopra la testata del letto, è capace di donare un’atmosfera romantica alla camera. Giusto compromesso fra l’imponenza di un baldacchino e
la semplicità di una zanzariera, per il suo scarso ingombro risulta facilmente collocabile in qualsiasi
ambiente dedicato al riposo notturno. Che sia di legno o di ferro battuto, che sia vintage o nuovo, un
cièlo Blanc Mariclò resta un elemento decorativo indispensabile per chiunque desideri portare un
tocco provencal-chic dentro casa.
Cièlo > Canopy noun [from the Latin caelum; later written as coelum]: expression borrowed from the
French ciel de lit, in shabby language it indicates the ornament that is placed above the bedhead to give
the bedroom a romantic atmosphere. The perfect compromise between the imposing framework of a
four-poster bed and simple mosquito netting, it doesn’t take up much space and can be placed in bedrooms of all shapes and sizes. Whether it’s made of wood or wrought iron, vintage or new, a Blanc Mariclò
canopy is a must-have for anyone who wants to bring a touch of Provençal chic to their home.
Decapato agg. [part. pass. di decapare, dal franc. décaper, propr. “togliere la copertura”]: effetto conferito ai mobili trattati con la tecnica decorativa della decapatura. Il procedimento, noto in Francia fin
dai tempi di Luigi XV, veniva originariamente usato per proteggere il legno dall’aggressione dei tarli.
Oggi, la decapatura è utilizzata per rinfrescare l’aspetto di vecchi mobili senza privarli del loro fascino
retrò grazie a una finitura capace di portare allo scoperto parti di legno dopo la tinteggiatura di colore bianco, avorio o pastello. Impiegata per elementi d’arredo nuovi, essa regala anche a questi ultimi
quel tocco d’imperfezione e di vissuto caratteristico dello shabbychic ideato dalla designer Rachel
Ashwell alla fine degli anni ’80.
Decapato > Pickled adj. [from the French décaper, literally “to remove the cover”]: effect given to furniture treated with the pickling technique. The procedure, known in France since the times of Louis XV,
was originally used to protect the wood against woodworm. Today, pickling is used to renew the appearance of old furniture without stripping it of its old-fashioned charm, thanks to a finish that leaves parts
of the wood visible after being painted a white, ivory or pastel colour. When used on new furniture, it
gives it that touch of imperfection and ageing typical of the shabby chic style invented by designer Rachel
Ashwell at the end of the 1980s.

Étagère s. f., fr. [der. di étage «piano, ripiano»]: mobile di piccole dimensioni, aperto e a più
ripiani, di solito fabbricato in legno o in ferro battuto. La versatilità di questa piccola scaffalatura
permette un utilizzo in diversi contesti d’arredo, offrendo una collocazione snella a libri o riviste,
biancheria, cesti, stoviglie o utensili da cucina. La tendenza Blanc Mariclò la vede spesso appesa,
specie nella stanza da bagno, dove può essere impiegata per riporre asciugamani, contenitori o prodotti per la cura della persona.
Étagère > shelving, noun [from the French étage meaning “shelf, floor”]: a small piece of furniture with
many open shelves, usually made of wood or wrought iron. The versatility of this small shelving unit
allows it to be used in various contexts, creating sleek housing for books or magazines, linen, baskets,
plates or kitchen utensils. Blanc Mariclò often hangs it, especially in the bathroom, where it can be used
to store towels, containers or grooming products.
Fregio s. m. [lat. mediev. frisium, che è prob. il lat. Phrygium (opus) «lavoro frigio», riferito alle
stoffe ricamate in oro originarie della Frigia]: in architettura, una zona decorata ad andamento
orizzontale. Per estens., un qualsiasi ornamento simile a un fregio architettonico, sia esso intagliato,
ricamato o disegnato. Nei mobili sottoposti a decapatura, i fregi sono la porzione decorata che tende
a risaltare di più, costituendo uno dei tratti rappresentativi di quel look informale e vissuto che tanto
contraddistingue l’arredamento shabby e provenzale. Le ambientazioni Blanc Mariclò utilizzano fregi
in pasta di legno, ferro battuto o resina anche come meri decori a parete: possono essere nodi d’amore, fiocchi, tralci di fiori o ali d’angelo, il più delle volte posizionati sopra le porte o le testate dei letti,
in grado di impreziosire ogni stanza con un tocco di romanticismo e di personalità.
Fregio > frieze noun [from the Medieval Latin Frisium, which probably comes from the Latin Phrygium
(opus) meaning “Phrygian work”, referring to the gold embroidered fabrics from Phrygia]: in architecture, a horizontal decorated area. By extension, any ornament that is similar to an architectural frieze,
be it carved, embroidered or drawn. In furniture treated with the pickling effect, the friezes are one of
the distinguishing features. They are the decorated section that tends to stand out more, giving it that
casual and lived look that characterises shabby and Provencal décor. The Blanc Mariclò rooms use wood
pulp, iron or resin friezes even just as decorations on the wall: they can be love knots, bows, branches
of flowers or angel wings, most often placed over the doors or headboards, enhancing any room with a
touch of romance and personality.
Guardaroba s.m. [comp. di guarda- e roba]: grande armadio nel quale riporre biancheria o vestiti.
Per estens., l’insieme degli abiti posseduti da una persona. I guardaroba Blanc Mariclò presentano
tonalità neutre e forme spesso sinuose, si dotano di scatole e di cesti per una migliore organizzazione
del contenuto, e fra i loro ripiani non è raro trovare spighe di lavanda essiccata, ciuffi di ortensie o
essenze naturali.
Guardaroba > wardrobe noun [composed of ward and robe]: a large wardrobe where linen or clothes
are kept. By extension, all of the clothes owned by one person. The Blanc Mariclò wardrobes are decorated in neutral tones and often have sleek forms. They are equipped with boxes and baskets to help
organise the contents of the wardrobe and it is not uncommon to find ears of dried lavender and clumps
of hydrangeas or natural essences in their shelves.
Home s. ingl. [ant. hām, affine al ted. Heim], usato in ital. al femm.: la Casa con la c maiuscola, non
considerata come semplice edificio, bensì come spazio del cuore, sede preziosa degli affetti di famiglia, dei ricordi, dei nostri più cari e intensi vissuti. È ciò da cui è scaturito il sogno di Blanc Mariclò:
un luogo considerato a livello emotivo e, in quanto tale, capace di rappresentare lo spunto per intere
collezioni di biancheria e linee di decori per interni improntate a uno stile accogliente, luminoso e
neo romantico.
Home > noun [From hām, closely related to the German Heim]: the Home with a capital H, not regarded as a simple building, but as a place of the heart, where affectionate memories of our family and dearest friends can be found along with intense experiences. It is this that led to Blanc Mariclò’s dream: a
place envisioned on an emotional level and, as such, capable of representing the starting point for entire
collections of linens and interior decoration lines marked by their cosy, bright and neo-romantic style.

Impuntura s. f. [der. di punto, sul modello di puntura]: In generale, una cucitura che trapassa
più tessuti o anche più strati di cuoio, per tenerli bene uniti, per fermarne l’imbottitura o per
ornamento. Nei boutis di Blanc Mariclò, l’impuntura disegna le trame della caratteristica imbottitura di questo genere di copriletto da mezza stagione. Può trattarsi di una cucitura più o meno
evidente che dà forma a un ramage o a un tratteggio tono su tono, in ogni caso risulta sempre
ben fitta, per terminare nell’orlo smerlato che decora ogni nostro boutis.
Impuntura > Stitching . f. [Der. the point on the model of puncture]: In general, a seam that passes
more fabrics or even more layers of leather, to keep them well united, to fast the padding or for ornamental purposes. In Blanc Mariclò boutis, the stitching draws the plots of padding feature of this kind
of bedspread for midseason. This can be a seam more or less evident that shapes a foliage or tonal
hatch, whichever is always very dense, to finish in the scalloped hem which decorate all our boutis.
Letto s. m. [lat. lectus]: Mobile destinato al riposo e al sonno delle persone, formato in modo
che vi si possa giacere comodamente distesi. Vero e proprio fulcro dell’arredamento dedicato alla
camera, i letti Blanc Mariclò sono sempre coronati da un cielo e si presentano in tinte preferibilmente neutre. Possono essere in legno intagliato o avere una testata imbottita con lavorazione capitonné, ma su di essi non può mai mancare un innumerevole numero di cuscini e, nella stagione
invernale, un morbido plaid che doni tepore nelle giornate più fredde.
Letto > Bed m. [Lat. lectus]: Forniture intended to people rest and sleep, made so that you can lie
comfortably lying. The very core element of furniture dedicated to the bedroom, Blanc MariClò beds
are always crowned by a sky and come in neutral colors preferably. They can be made of carved wood
or have a padded headboard with capitonné, but on them can never lack a countless number of pillows and, in winter, a soft plaid which gifts warmth on cold days.
Mantovana > Valance. f [from the adj. mantovano]: Tissue variously shaped, which is overlapping
with the top of curtains and blinds to constitute a finishing touch. Over the past few Blanc Mariclò
collections, valances have increasingly imposed as a piece of furniture suitable not only in the windows of living rooms or bedrooms, but to those of any other environment in which it was necessary
a decorative contribute. So, after the first country-chic valances combined with different lines of our
collections, appeared embroidered valances with lace, tulle and linen, which now overlap with many
of our most precious curtains.
Nappa s. f.: Detta anche embrasse, è un tipo di ornamento formato da una serie di fili (di cotone, canapa, juta, lino o materiale sintetico) riuniti a mazzetto a un’estremità degli stessi. Utilissime per fermare
e raccogliere i tendaggi ai lati delle finestre, le nappe Blanc Mariclò sono variamente lavorate, si ornano
di fiori, di fiocchi, di piccoli gessi e, quando sono di piccole dimensioni, diventano decori da appendere alla chiave di una porta, alla maniglia di un mobile o a quella di un armadio, contribuendo alla
personalizzazione di uno stile.
Nappa > Tassel s.f.: Also known as embrasse, is a type of ornament formed by a series of threads (cotton,
hemp, jute, flax or synthetic material) gathered in bunch at one end of the same. Useful to fast and pick up
curtains at the sides of windows, Blanc Mariclò tassels are variously processed, are adorned with flowers,
ribbons, small plasters and, when they are small, they become decorations to hang on the key of a door,
the handle of a piece of furniture or to a closet, contributing to customizing a style.

Orsetto s. m. [dim. di orso]: Piccolo orso, orsacchiotto. Anche nome di alcuni mammiferi che,
nella forma, ricordano quella di un orsacchiotto; per es., l’o. lavatore, o l’o. marsupiale. Gli orsetti
sono da tempo uno dei classici delle collezioni Blanc Mariclò: morbidissimi e simili al famoso
Teddy Bear, sono vestiti con abitini in pizzo san gallo o maglioncini tricot, ed è proprio la cura del
dettaglio a renderli un prodotto amato da grandi e piccini. Ma non è tutto: Orsetto è anche il nome
di un coordinato tessile della linea Baby Blanc. Interamente realizzato in Italia, esso comprende
lenzuola e pile per culla, bavaglini e portaoggetti a fondo bianco con inserti sagomati a orsetto in
tinta neutra.
Orsetto > Teddy’s. m. [Dim. Bear]: Small bear, teddy bear. Also the name of some mammals who reminiscent, the shape of a teddy bear. Bears have long been one of the classic collections Blanc Mariclò:
soft and similar to the famous Teddy Bear, dressed in clothes with San Gallo lace or knitted sweaters,
and it is the attention to detail which make that product loved by young and old. But that’s not all:
Teddy Bear is also the name of a Baby Blanc textile coordinated. Entirely made in Italy, it includes
sheets and pile for cradle, bibs and storage in white with molded sleeves with bear shape in neutral
shades
Panchina s. f. [dim. di panca]: Piccola panca. In partic., sedile per più persone, solitamente fisso,
in legno, ferro, pietra o cemento, posto in luoghi pubblici o in locali aperti al pubblico. La panchina, nella visione di Blanc Mariclò, è un complemento d’arredo che si modula a seconda del suo
utilizzo. Per interno, si fa fondoletto dai gambi lavorati in stile Luigi XV o XVI, e si riveste di soffici
imbottiture capitonné in color ecrù o tortora. Per esterno, si forgia in sedute di ferro battuto, si
arricciola nelle forme, si tinge di bianco, si arricchisce di motivi a foglie e fiori per portare all’aria

Panchina > bench. f. [Dim. bench]: Small bench. In particular, seat for more people, usually fixed to the
ground, in wood, iron, stone or concrete, it is usually placed in public locations or places open to the public.
The bench, in Blanc Mariclò vision, is a piece of furniture that is multifunctional.
For the interior, you put it at the end of the bed with stems processed in a Louis XV or XVI way, and take
on soft padding cushions in ecru or beige. For outdoor, are seats in wrought iron with curly shapes, tinged

tavola. Spesso indica il dipinto incorniciato, ma in alcuni usi può indicare la sola cornice. Dalle romantiche stampe floreali alle simpatiche illustrazioni da cucina, dalle stampe su tela alle riproduzioni di
vasi in stile Piranesi, i quadri Blanc Mariclò arredano dalle piccole alle grandi pareti, facendo di ogni
angolo della casa un particolare shabby chic dal sapore toscano.
Quadro > painting [lat. quadrum “square shape” neutral noun adj. Quadrus]: quadrangular painting; oil
p., tempera p., acrylic color p.; p. on canvas , p. on cardboard, p. on plywood; p. on wood or on table. Often
it indicates the framed painting, but in some uses may indicate the frame alone. Romantic floral prints
with nice kitchen illustrations, from prints on canvas to the reproductions of Piranesi-style vases, Blanc
Mariclò paintings furnish small and large walls making each corner of the house a shabby chic particular
with Tuscan flavor.
Retrò agg. fr. [abbrev. di rétrospectif «retrospettivo»], invar. - Che si rifà al passato, ai decenni o ventenni precedenti, e quindi arretrato, invecchiato, datato: stile r., arredamento volutamente r.; gusto,
idee, mentalità rétro. Si sa, il legame compassato fa parte delle atmosfere Blanc Mariclò, assumendo

Retrò agg. fr.[Abbrev. rétrospectif of “retrospective”], That goes back to the past, to the previous decades,
and then backward, aged, dated: style r., deliberately r. Furnishing; taste, ideas, retro mindset. You know,
the link with the past is part of Blanc Mariclò atmosphere, taking forms and finitures able to donate to the
furniture an imperfect and distressed appearance.
It is a way to make the rooms cozy and informal. But Retrò it is also the definition that, in our catalog
autumn-winter 2015 / ‘16, indicate the small with aged flavor chandeliers. If we close our eyes, in fact, we
can almost see them hanging in
the home of a grandmother or an old aunt, while the fireplace crackles and the kitchen smells come out of
the most beloved tradition ...

Separé s. m., fr. [part. pass. sostantivato di séparer, propr. «separato, appartato»] – Nei locali pubblici, salottino o settore riservato.
Nell’arredamento, paravento formato da uno o più pannelli collegati da cerniere, utilizzato come
parete mobile o divisorio. Accessorio dal fascino sofisticato, il separé Blanc MariClò muta senza
perdere d’attualità. Dai primi separé in ferro battuto e legno con inserti simili a tendine, siamo
passati a elementi d’arredo che coniugano l’utilità dell’accessorio a una ricercatezza fatta di particolari. Ne è esempio il separé della linea Manhattan, un classico reso contemporaneo da linee
pulite, tappezzerie naturali e rifiniture chiodate.
Separè > booth [Past. part. noun of séparer, Der. “Separate, secluded”] - In public places, sitting or
reserved area. In furniture, folding screen formed by one or more panels connected by hinges, used as
a movable wall or partition. Accessory with a sophisticated allure, the Blanc Mariclò booth changes
without losing topical. From the first separè in wrought-iron and wood, with inserts similar to little
curtains, we moved on to the furnishings that combine the utility of the accessory to a refinement
made of particulars.
The Manhattan separè line is an example of it, a classic made contemporary by clean lines, natural

Vestisedia s. m. – Diventato un vero e proprio must delle nostre collezioni, il vestisedia Blanc
MariClò è una fodera in tessuto che riveste la sedia per intero. Realizzato in puro cotone e imbottito nelle parti dello schienale e della seduta, presenta un’arricciatura sul retro che lo fa adattare
