3. Beschrijving van het werving- en selectieproces & inhoudelijke motivatie:
Proces
Werkwijze BAC (aantal bijeenkomsten, methode, afspraken vooraf et cetera)
As input the committee received CV, list of publications, research statement and teaching statement of the
candidate, three recommendation letters of internationally renowned researchers in software engineering, and a
positively evaluated Vici proposal that the candidate submitted in 2013. The committee met once, on May 28,
2014, to interview the candidate and discuss in how far she qualifies for the FDL chair on Web-based Software
Services.
Verloop en methode selectieproces kandidaten
(aantal sollicitatierondes en gebruikte methode(n): casussen, presentaties, schrijven onderzoeksvoorstellen, proefcollege et cetera)
The committee met at the VU on May 28, 2014; Prof. Juristo participated via skype. The meeting consisted of a
preparatory discussion of 10 minutes without the candidate, a presentation by the candidate of 25 minutes, and
interview of the candidate by the committee of one hour, and a concluding discussion by the committee of 30
minutes.
The findings of the committee on the basis of the input and meeting are described below.

Inhoudelijk
Afwegingen van de BAC.
Dr. Patricia Lago, UHD at the Department of Computer Science of the VU, was put forward for this Fenna
Diemer-Lindeboom chair. Her research area, software services and in particular her focus on Green IT, fits very
well with the research agenda of the department. She has a strong list of publications, with articles in top
journals such as IEEE Software, IEEE TSE and ACM TOSEM, as well as in highly competitive international
conference proceedings. She has co-edited two scientific books. Her h-index (in Google Scholar) is 23. She
has a strong international research reputation. Three international top researchers in her research field of the
candidate have provided very positive reference letters. They especially praise her research in software
engineering, as well as her presentation and organisational skills. Dr. Lago is an area editor of the Journal of
Systems and Software and an advisory editorial board member of the Journal of Software: Evolution and
Process. She is co-chair of the ICT4S conference in 2014, chairs the steering committee of the WICSA
conference since 2011, and has been invited to develop a track on the Software Engineering Impact on Society
for the ICSE conference in 2015. She had research projects awarded in the Dutch STW program Jacquard
(GRIFFIN and SAPIENSA) and the EU FP7 program (S-Cube), is partner in the MRA Cluster Green Software
funded by EFRO (European Funding of European Regions), and obtained a considerable number of smaller
grants. She has acted as co-promotor of 8 PhD students, and her current span-of-control consists of 4 PhD
students and 2 fixed-term lecturers.
Dr. Lago has taught a broad range of Software Engineering courses over the years. Currently she is the
responsible lecturer of the Bachelor course Software Modeling. The student evaluations of this course have
improved considerably the last few years, from below to above average, owing to the fact that she has made
the course much more interactive. At Master level she teaches Service Oriented Design as well as Developing
Services for the Cloud, which are both running very well. Dr. Lago every year successfully supervises a
considerable number of MSc and BSc theses, literature studies and industrial internships. She has designed
the track Software Engineering and Internet and Web Technology as well as the track Software Engineering
and Green IT in the Master Computer Science. She recently successfully completed the BKO.
She plays an important role in coordinating European Erasmus Mundus programs and a European double
degree on Software Engineering. For many years she was chair of the committee Internationalisation within the
Faculty of Sciences, and member of the Program Committee Internationalisation at the VU. She currently is
member of the Science Council of the Department of Computer Science. She plays a prominent role in planning
the design of the new computer science building on the VU campus. Via the Network Institute she is involved in
the Consortium Green IT Amsterdam Region. She actively promotes the role of women in computer science.
During the interview, the candidate presented a clear, convincing and coherent research program in Green IT,
which is challenging, fits well with her research background, and has high societal relevance. She showed both
enthusiasm and drive for her research and teaching activities, and provided honest and adequate answers to
the questions by the committee members.
Concluding, Dr. Lago is a talented and highly motivated researcher, makes important contributions to our
educational programs, and has good management skills. The committee unanimously recommends that Dr.
Lago will be appointed on the Fenna Diemer-Lindeboom chair Web-based Software Services.
For her future research we give the candidate two recommendations. Her research vision in Green IT will
require collaborations with technically oriented researchers in electrical engineering and distributed computing.
It is important that she actively pursues such cross-links with other fields. And she should strive to obtain EU
funding, where there are ample opportunities to get financial backing for Green IT projects.
