Do We Need God?
• Does it really matter if God is real or not? Many
people feel no need of God.
Do We Need God?
• Yet we are obviously lacking something vitally
important--as a world, as nations, and as individuals.
Do We Need God?
• The Bible says God designed us to live in harmony
with himself. The reason our world and lives are
so messed up is that we are disconnected from him.
Do We Need God?
• Why think this is true?
• Why think what we are lacking is God?
I. Without God, Some Deep Human Desires Cannot
Be Met
A) Examples of some deep desires that cannot be fulfilled
apart from God:
1) A desire for purpose for life / a lasting significance
Designed = Purpose
Accident = No Purpose
My story
I. Without God, Some Deep Human Desires Cannot
Be Met
2) A desire for love and justice to win out ultimately
I. Without God, Some Deep Human Desires Cannot
Be Met
3) A desire for eternal life and heaven
I. Without God, Some Deep Human Desires Cannot
Be Met
B) Freud explained belief in God as a longing to have an ideal
father who can fulfil these types of desires.
Even though he thinks belief in God is
mistaken, he recognizes that this is a
persistent, universal longing of people
that cannot be fulfilled in this world.

Be Met

C) Having unfulfilled desires is not unusual.
What is unusual are universal desires for things that
don’t exist!
- thirst without water existing?
- hunger without food existing?
- wanting purpose when none exists?
I. Without God, Some Deep Human Desires Cannot
Be Met
We can deny and ignore these unfulfilled desires, but
can they be whispering to us that deep down, we
need God?
II. Without God, There‘s No Universal
Morality that Brings Peace
A) If God is not real, there‘s no standard of morality that
applies to all nations and people. Morality is just a
convention people adopt according to their own ideas
and/or culture.
II. Without God, There‘s No Universal
Morality that Brings Peace
B) In this “pragmatic” view of morality, if people make the
rules, they can change the rules too as they see fit.
When people accept this view, what results individually?
Nationally?
III. Without God‘s Empowering, We Often Don’t
Live As We Know We Should 如果没有神赐予力
A) Even when people accept a universal moral standard, they
often don‘t live up to it consistently and experience peace
with others and themselves.
“You then who teach others,
do you not teach yourself?
While you preach against
stealing, do you steal?”
Romans 2:21
III. Without God‘s Empowering, We Often Don’t
Live As We Know We Should 如果没有神赐予力
B) The Bible says that God made us to know innately there is
real right and wrong.
Speaking about people who don’t know God’s laws from the Bible,
the Apostle Paul says: “They show that the work of the law is
written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness,
and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them . . .”
Romans 2:15
III. Without God‘s Empowering, We Often Don’t
Live As We Know We Should 如果没有神赐予力
C) The Bible also says we really cannot live up to what we know
is right and wrong when we are out of harmony with God.
Paul says even he cannot do as he knows he should when he is
not letting God‘s spirit work within him: “For I have the desire to do
what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the
good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.”
Romans 7:18
他知道当行的事 :“ 我也知道在我里头,就是我肉体之中,没有良善;
IV. Without God's Empowering, We Cannot Find
Fulfilment in All Circumstances
A) Human satisfaction often does not last long, and is easily
frustrated by circumstances outside our control.
IV. Without God's Empowering, We Cannot Find
Fulfilment in All Circumstances
B) Christians who yield to God and live in harmony with Him
experience life differently--even in extreme hardships they
say they can experience satisfaction.
“To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the
Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:6
IV. Without God's Empowering, We Cannot Find
Fulfilment in All Circumstances
C) To be in harmony with God takes “Believe in”, which is
more than “Believe that”.
IV. Without God's Empowering, We Cannot Find
Fulfilment in All Circumstances
D) Christians who live in harmony with God and find
fulfilment support what Pascal said.
“There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of every
person which cannot be filled by any thing but only
by God the creator made known through Jesus
Christ.”
