Michael Doran
Systems Librarian
ELUNA 2011 - Milwaukee, Wisconsin - May 12
Hi, I’m U. Scase, a library
work-study student.
… and I’m supposed
to be shelf reading.
The Library of Congress call
number system is confusing.
It would be easier if there was
some way to shelf read by title.
Hi, I’m a library
staffer.
I’m doing stacks
maintenance…
… and I need to know:
1. What’s on the shelf,
that shouldn’t be there.
2. What’s not on the shelf
that should be there.
I’m deciding which books
can be weeded or moved
to remote storage…
And I’m a collection
development librarian.
… and I’m interested in:
1. How often an item is used.
2. Where else an item may be
available.

You are here…
… and your PC is?
Yea!
I can bring a laptop into the
stacks to access Voyager!
Review the use cases…
 A shelf list
 By call number
 By title
 A way to determine…
 What’s on the shelf that shouldn’t be there
 What’s not on the shelf that should be there
 Info for collection management decisions
 Usage statistics
 Links to OPAC, WorldCat, and Google Books
Okay. Maybe the Voyager clients
aren’t that useful in the stacks.
So what’s a library
staffer to do?
A mobile
Voyager client
for working
in the stacks
ShelfLister has been optimized
– for mobile devices
– for small screens
But as a web application…
…it also works fine on
– a tablet
– a laptop
– a PC
The only requirements are:
 an internet connection
• Cellular
• WiFi
• Ethernet
 a browser

No code is displayed for the
default “Not Charged” status.

When you combine…
A list representing all the items
that should be on the shelf (that
is, if nobody ever used them)…
With real-time status information
The result is a whole greater
than the sum of its parts.
2
There should be gaps here.
If any of these items ARE on
the shelf, that’s a problem.
Should NOT be any gaps here.
If any of these items are NOT
on the shelf, that’s potentially
a problem.
Books with a status of Discharged
may, or may not, be on the shelf.
These need to be reviewed by the
appropriate department

ShelfLister “Marked Item” values
are a configuration option. They
can be anything that is appropriate
for the project at hand.
For more on Marked Items, see…

The “By Call Number”
search form is a fallback
for collections that are
not barcoded.
lenient about case and spaces
okay to truncate call number
must select location
currently only option is LC classification
…whereas
the “By Barcode” search form
works for any classification
scheme normalized by
Voyager.
5
However….
Once a call number entry
search is executed, the results
are exactly the same as a
barcode entry search.
Enter (only) one barcode…
…get (only) one record
Enter (only) one barcode…
…get many records
They all have
the same
call number.
1
The Call Numbers
“plus” button…
...displays data from
the item record:
• Enumeration
• Chronology
• Year
4
The call number come from the
MARC holdings (“MFHD”) record
2
Call number “+” info comes
from the item record
2
The good news is…
…you can easily toggle the
display of item level data.
The bad news is…
…item level data is not
normalized (in Voyager),
so sorting breaks down.
Call number “+” is not just
for periodicals. Some
books also have useful
item-level information.
The yellow highlighting
helps distinguish between
the call number and the
item record info and to
associate that data with
the “+/-” button that
controls its display.
These are place markers.
They don’t do anything else.

ShelfLister data
is as accurate
as your catalog

There should be a one-to-one
correspondence between…

Some anomalies
explained
We’re not talking about
misshelved items, e.g.
 books that are out
of call number order
 books in correct call
number order, but in
the wrong location
Those are not really
anomalies and are
easily explained.

852 indicator 1 tells Voyager how
to NORMALIZE the call number.
No normalization, or the wrong
normalization, screws up sorting.
Bad sorting == bad shelf list.
