Performance Application Lifecycle

6

Performance Application Lifecycle (PAL) What?

Managing performance and availability in both pre-production and production

How?

By integrating testing and monitoring solutions to drive efficiency, mitigate risk, and reduce costs

Deployment

By utilizing the Performance Application Lifecycle management module in Performance Center

7

Why is it important?

Performance Requirements?

Record Business Processes Testing Run Load Tests Record Business Operations Deploy and Monitor Processes “86% of IT projects experience performance problems when first put in production” Gartner

8

Why is it hard to achieve?

Distributed and Offshore teams SOA, Shared Services, Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0 Failur e Increasing complexity New and Agile Business Capabilities ?

CRM Operations e-Commerce Finance

CIO

Increasing time and cost pressures Integrated business processes

PAL scenarios – attributes of a real-time enterprise

TESTING Record Business Process Scripts Test and Optimize OPERATIONS Reuse Business Process Scripts New application deployment Bidirectional Asset Reuse Continuous improvement (Hot packs, fixes etc) Major upgrades

Reuse Business Processes Scripts/SLAs from Testing in Production Leverage Real User Information in Pre-Production Unified Diagnostics

Monitor and Optimize

10

Introduction to PAL and process flow

Step 1:

Import production data

Step 2: Data can be imported from Business Service Management 9.2 and Webtrends 9.0 or later Production data includes information such as user traffic and monitoring data

Create Production Report

Production report is created in Performance Center Data is imported in XML format from BSM Report includes different activities observed in production

11

Introduction to PAL and process flow

Step 3:

Design and Run load test

Production report is used to design load test and scripts Execute load test to capture results on test environment Step 4:

Add load test data to the report

Add test execution result to the report and compare to production data Load test execution is a iterative process Use the data to tune the load test until it resembles production behavior

12

Introduction to PAL and process flow

Step 5:

Export data to production

Various assets can be exported to monitor application in production Application should be certified for release before exporting data

Summary 1. Lifecycle must start with clear business requirements 2. Testing must be done based on actual production measures

Without it IT cannot set, test, measure, or deliver on expectations Without it Quality will suffer 13

3. An accurate view of service level must be measured and monitored

Without it Service degradation is inevitable

“If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it” - Dave Packard
