George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation 2012 Annual Meeting GGSS and NEES@UCDavis Outreach Partnership Jack Montgomery Katerina Ziotopoulou Ross W. Boulanger July 2012 INTRODUCTION Graduate Geotechnical Student Society (GGSS) Students and faculty specializing in geotechnical engineering at UC Davis NEES@UC Davis Geotechnical research facility and home to the 9-m radius geotechnical centrifuge Both organizations committed to promoting earthquake engineering education GGSS Round Table, 2010 J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 OUTLINE Leveraging resources Ladder mentoring Why does it work? Developing life-long habits J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 MAJOR CONTRIBUTORS TO GGSS-NEES@UC DAVIS OUTREACH Professor Ross W. Boulanger Director, NEES@UC Davis Dr. Dan W. Wilson Asst. Director, NEES@UC Davis Professor Jason T. DeJong Advisor, GGSS Jenny Chen EOT Coord., NEES@UC Davis Katerina Ziotopoulou Treasurer & Webmaster, GGSS K. Ziotopoulou – NEESJuly Quake Summit- July 2012 J. Montgomery – R.W. Boulanger––R.W. NEESBoulanger Quake Summit2012 LEVERAGING RESOURCES – GGSS AND NEES@UC DAVIS NEES@UC Davis: 7 full-time staff Able to provide resources, facility, encouragement and mentoring Geotechnical Graduate Student Society (GGSS) Student run organization with approx. 30 members Able to provide “human capital” and enthusiasm K. Ziotopoulou – NEESJuly Quake Summit- July 2012 J. Montgomery – R.W. Boulanger––R.W. NEESBoulanger Quake Summit2012 LEVERAGING RESOURCES – GGSS AND NEES@UC DAVIS By combining resources, each organization is able to reach a broader audience Diverse body of motivated graduate students is able to connect with younger audiences Financial and technical support from NEES makes it all possible K. Ziotopoulou – NEESJuly Quake Summit- July 2012 J. Montgomery – R.W. Boulanger––R.W. NEESBoulanger Quake Summit2012 LEVERAGING RESOURCES – GGSS AND NEES@UC DAVIS Currently sponsoring 6-10 events per year We cater to a wide range of age groups and many of our groups return year after year GGSS and NEES@UC Davis maintain 2 complimentary websites to recruit more groups and publicize our work K. Ziotopoulou – NEESJuly Quake Summit- July 2012 J. Montgomery – R.W. Boulanger––R.W. NEESBoulanger Quake Summit2012 LEVERAGING RESOURCES – EXAMPLES Shake table demo at Harper Middle School in Davis Facilitators explained basics of Earthquake Engineering Middle school students designed, constructed and tested K’Nex buildings over 3 class periods J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 LEVERAGING RESOURCES – EXAMPLES Shake table demo at Harper Middle School in Davis NEES@UC Davis supplied the K’Nex and guidance on running the shake table Graduate students volunteered their time to make the event happen We’ll be returning this fall! J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 LADDER MENTORING Knowledge and expertise are passed down to ensure the program remains strong through “generations” of graduate students Creates a culture of Faculty and mentorship which keeps NEES Staff participants involved and helps bring in new students GGSS leaders New graduate students Undergraduate students Outreach activities Partnering with other organizations, such as UCD School of Education, brings new ideas and techniques J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 LADDER MENTORING Ladder mentoring benefits everyone involved in the process This arrangement keeps the program strong while building an army of skilled outreach facilitators Leadership opportunities for graduate students better prepare them for life after grad school J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 LADDER MENTORING – EXAMPLE Sacramento Area Science Project Summer Institute GGSS, NEES@UC Davis and School of Education partnered to create an Earthquake Engineering module for local earth science teachers Focused on incorporating technology, hands-on demonstrations and formative assessment techniques J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 LADDER MENTORING – EXAMPLE Sacramento Area Science Project Summer Institute Program designed and run by 2 GGSS members Guidance provided by Prof. Boulanger and School of Education staff Demonstrations were researched and constructed by REU using NEESHub resources and NEES staff support REU Andrew Makdisi J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 WHY DOES IT WORK? Partnerships help leverage resources, share ideas UC Davis faculty are supportive, allow students time to participate Collecting feedback encourages constant improvement Most importantly: It’s fun! J. Montgomery – K. Ziotopoulou – R.W. Boulanger – NEES Quake Summit- July 2012 DEVELOPING LIFE-LONG HABITS The program allows graduate students to develop leadership and mentorship skills Leads to better qualified graduates for positions in practice or academia Students develop a love for outreach which they can take to their next position Recent grads: J.
