Engaging Students with Library Materials: How LMS Administrators, Faculty, and Librarians Can Collaborate for Better Learning Outcomes Courtney McGough and Michael Campbell

Introductions Courtney McGough, GALILEO Michael Campbell, GeorgiaVIEW

Outline • • • • GALILEO-GeorgiaVIEW Collaboration Integrations – – GeorgiaVIEW process GALILEO and other library integrations Getting library resources into courses Collaborations

GALILEO-GeorgiaVIEW Collaboration • • • Facilitate inclusion of library and learning resources in online courses Promote student use of library resources by reducing barriers Supports the Affordable Learning Georgia initiative

GeorgiaVIEW Integrations Process

 Partnership with Campuses  Maintain Vendor Contacts  D2L System Integrity  Community

Production January 2013 3 Applications Integrated Production October 2014 58 Applications Production April 2015 60 Applications

Interwoven (Deep) Integration Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) Remote Plugins (LTI 2.0) Valence – requires programming skill

LTI Warnings Don’t install LTI if:  Integration requires one LTI configuration per course or assignment  Instructors must install their own LTI links

Steps to Integrate for Instructors  Contact your Campuses LMS Administrator  Avoid vendors contacting Administrators

Who is my D2L Brightspace Administrator

Steps for Administrators  Open ticket with ITS Helpdesk  GeorgiaVIEW will help set up or obtain vendor support  Test in DEV first

Steps for Admins (continued)  Campus approves of application in DEV  If new, tool is reviewed by GeorgiaVIEW  How this may affect other orgs on the same server  Any security concerns  Upon approval, request is given ok for PROD  Campus approves of setup in PROD  ITS Ticket is closed

How much time does an integration take?

Anywhere between 2 weeks to 3 months •

Rule of Thumb

Notify Admins 1 to 3 months before an integration is needed.

 Remind Campus Departments to work with LMS Administrator for any third party discussion and implementation  ITS Helpdesk requests from campus will be rerouted to engage LMS Administrator  Open separate ticket for each integration needed

Integrations

GALILEO Integrations Previously… – GALILEO password-embedded link http://www.galileo.usg.edu/express?instcode=xxxx& password= [your current password] – But, someone had to update the password each time it changed

GALILEO Integrations • • Now… GALILEO Auto-Authentication Widget GALILEO Search Box • • Soon… Films on Demand And others…

GALILEO Auto-Authentication Widget With this integration, when users log in to GeorgiaVIEW, they are automatically logged in to GALILEO Contact your primary campus administrator

GALILEO Search Box Widget A Discover GALILEO search box can be added to a course page or to the main landing page Contact your primary campus administrator

Films on Demand Allows faculty to insert a Films on Demand video into their course using the Insert Stuff button

Tips for Linking to Library Resources • • Why linking?

Linking to – – – Articles Searches Journals

Link to Articles Use the persistent link in the article’s citation information – – – Permalink in EBSCO databases (e.g., Academic Search Complete ) or in discovery searches Document URL in ProQuest (e.g., Research Library ) Document link in LexisNexis Academic

How do you get them into your courses?

52

Do you have an example of a librarian, faculty member, instructional designer, and/or campus admin working together to get library materials into their course?

• • Does your institution use one of these integrations?

What has been your experience with it?

In conclusion…

Take-Away Points • • Add the GALILEO integration (if you haven’t already) – talk to your campus D2L admin Talk with your library about the services they offer to faculty and students
