What Happens When You Die?
Does Your Soul Go to Heaven?
Do Unbelievers Go to Hell?
Live Forever?
And the LORD God said, "The man has now
become like one of us, knowing good and
evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his
hand and take also from the tree of life and
eat, and live forever" (Genesis 3:22 NIV).
*Most Christians believe that they have
immortality – that when their body dies their
soul still lives and goes to heaven
*Most religions teach an afterlife in which the
“essence” or soul of a person lives after the
death of the body
*Most people in the world believe in some sort
of afterlife – that death is only a transition to
another life state (ie Elysian fields)
*What really happens when a person dies?
*Sleep as a Metaphor for Death
*Do Believers Have Eternal Life in Them Now?
*What is the purpose of the resurrection?
*Does the Creator send unbelievers to Hell?
*What about Being Home with the Lord?
*Rich man and Lazarus?
*The thief on the cross?
The Creation of Man – What is a Soul?
Yahuwah Elohim formed the man from the dust
of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life, and the man became a living
being. (Genesis 2:7)
Nephesh chayah – soul, living being, life, self,
person, desire, appetite, emotion, and passion. It
is that which breathes, the breathing substance
or being. The body is a soul when it is breathing
and living. Or, a soul is a living, breathing body!
Nephesh Chayah
And Elohim said, "Let the water teem with living creatures
(Hebrew, nephesh chayah), and let birds fly above the
earth across the expanse of the sky." (Genesis 1:20)
And Elohim said, "Let the land produce living creatures
(Hebrew, nephesh chayah) according to their kinds:
(Genesis 1:24)
Now Yahuwah Elohim had formed out of the ground all the
beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought
them to the man to see what he would name them; and
whatever the man called each living creature (Hebrew,
nephesh chayah), that was its name. (Genesis 2:19)
Nephesh Chayah
So you see, the “soul” only exists where there
is breath in a living body. When Elohim
created Adam, he formed his body out of the
dust of the earth. But Adam didn't become a
living soul until Elohim breathed into his
nostrils. Thus a nephesh (a soul) is a living,
breathing body.
Soul
Be careful that your understanding of “soul” is
biblical and not Greek thinking
The soul cannot be separated from a body
Heb 4:12 the word of Elohim can separate
soul and spirit
Surely Die
And Yahuwah Elohim commanded the man,
"You are free to eat from any tree in the
garden; but you must not eat from the tree of
the knowledge of good and evil, for when you
eat of it you will surely die.“ (Genesis 2:16-17)
Grammar alert!!!
Mot yamut –– qal infinitive absolute + qal
imperfect 2nd masc singular
The infinitive absolute expresses emphasis
when it immediately precedes the finite verb.
You WILL DIE!
Death = No Life
The Lie in the Garden
Did Elohim really say, 'You must not eat from
any tree in the garden'?" (Genesis 3:1)
"You will not surely die...for Elohim knows
that when you eat of it your eyes will be
opened, and you will be like Elohim"
(Genesis 3:4-5).
The Father of Lies
He was a murderer from the beginning, not
holding to the truth, for there is not truth in
him. When he lies, he speaks his native
language, for he is a liar, and the father of lies
(4th Gospel 8:44)
Do we believe what the Eternal
One said or will we believe what
the Liar said?
The entire debate over what happens when a
person dies comes down to this simple
question.
The Promise from Elohim – Dust to Dust
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your
food until you return to the ground, since
from it you were taken; for dust you are and
to dust you will return. (Genesis 3:19)
Death means a returning to Dust
When you hide your face, they are terrified; when
you take away their breath, they die and return to
the dust. (Psalm 104:29)
You turn men back to dust, saying, "Return to
dust, O sons of men." (Psalm 90:3)
What gain is there in my destruction, in my going
down into the pit? Will the dust praise you? Will
it proclaim your faithfulness? (Psalm 30:9)
The Soul, not just the Body, Dies
For every living soul (Hebrew, nephesh) is mine, the life
(Hebrew, nephesh) of the father as well as the life
(Hebrew, nephesh) of the son-- both alike belong to me.
The soul (Hebrew, nephesh) who sins is the one who will
die. (18:4)
Here, the soul - the living essence of a man - and not just
the body, will die on account of his sin. This refrain is
repeated again, later:
The soul (Hebrew, nephesh) who sins is the one who will
die. (vs. 20)
Can the Dead Do Anything?
For the living know that they will die, but the
dead know nothing (Ecclesiastes 9:5).
In the grave, where you are going, there is
neither working nor planning nor knowledge
nor wisdom (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Their love, their hate and their jealousy have
long since vanished (Ecclesiastes 9:6)
His breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in
that very day his thoughts perish (Psalms 146:4, KJV).
For the grave cannot praise you, death cannot sing
your praise; those who go down to the pit cannot
hope for your faithfulness. The living, the living - they
praise you (Psalms 28:18,19).
No one remembers you when he is dead. Who praises
you from the grave? (Psalms 6:5).

New Testament “Soul”
That word is yuch, (pronounced psukay). The
BDAG Lexicon breaks down this word:
1.life on earth in its animating aspect making bodily
function possible
a. (breath of) life, life-principle, soul, of animals
b. the condition of being alive, earthly life, life itself
2.seat and center of the inner human life in its
many and varied aspects, soul
3.an entity w. personhood, person
Corresponds perfectly with nephesh
Do Believers Have Immortality?
Elohim, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of
kings and Master of masters, who alone is
immortal and who lives in unapproachable
light, whom no one has seen or can see. (1
Timothy 6:15-16)
When Will Believers Have Immortality?
For the perishable must clothe itself with
the imperishable, and the mortal with
immortality. When the perishable has been
clothed with the imperishable, and the
mortal with immortality, then the saying
that is written will come true: "Death has
been swallowed up in victory." (1
Corinthians 15:53-54)
Death Compared to Sleep – An Appropriate
Metaphor
...if I have done evil to him who is at peace with
me or without cause have robbed my foe-- then
let my enemy pursue and overtake me; let him
trample my life to the ground and make me
sleep in the dust. (Psalm 7:4-5)
Look on me and answer, Yahuwah my Elohim.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;
(Psalm 13:3)
You sweep men away in the sleep of death;
(Psalm 90:5)
Valiant men lie plundered, they sleep their last
sleep; not one of the warriors can lift his hands.
(Psalm 76:5)
I will make her officials and wise men drunk, her
governors, officers and warriors as well; they
will sleep forever and not awake," declares the
King, whose name is Yahuwah Almighty.
(Jeremiah 51:57)
The Sleeping Awake
Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth
will awake: some to everlasting life, others to
shame and everlasting contempt. Those who
are wise will shine like the brightness of the
heavens, and those who lead many to
righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.
(Daniel 12:2-3)
Lazarus Slept
After he had said this, he went on to tell
them, "Our friend El'azar has fallen asleep;
but I am going there to wake him up." His
disciples replied, "Master, if he sleeps, he will
get better." Yahusha had been speaking of
his death, but his disciples thought he meant
natural sleep. So then he told them plainly,
"El'azar is dead..." (4th Gospel 11:11-14)
• When Stephen was stoned and dying, the Bible
says he fell asleep:
Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Master, do
not hold this sin against them." When he had said
this, he fell asleep. (Acts 7:60)
• And David fell asleep in death:
For when David had served Elohim's purpose in his
own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with
his fathers and his body decayed. (Acts 13:36)
Paul uses Sleep as a metaphor for death
Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about
those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of
men, who have no hope. We believe that Yahusha
died and rose again and so we believe that Elohim
will bring with Yahusha those who have fallen
asleep in him. According to Yahuwah's own word,
we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left
till the coming of the Master, will certainly not
precede those who have fallen asleep. (1
Thessalonians 4:13-15)
Does Yeshua Teach That Believers Never Die?
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only
begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life (KJV).
“Believe” = “Keep the commandments”
Now a man came up to Yeshua and asked,
"Teacher, what good thing must I do to get
eternal life?“ "Why do you ask me about what
is good?" Yeshua replied. "There is only One
who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the
commandments.“ "Which ones?" the man
inquired. Yeshua replied, "'Do not murder, do
not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give
false testimony, honor your father and mother,'
and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'“ (Matthew
19:16-19)
Does Yeshua Teach That Believers Never Die?
Question: “But we have left all….”
But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this
time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and
mothers, and children, and lands, with
persecutions; and in the world to come eternal
life (Mark 10:30, KJV, see also Luke 18:30).
Does Yeshua Teach That Believers Never Die?
Yahusha said to her, "Your brother will rise
again.“ Martha answered, "I know he will rise
again in the resurrection at the last day.“
Yahusha said to her, "I am the resurrection and
the life. He who believes in me will live, even
though he dies; and whoever lives and believes
in me will never die. Do you believe this?“ (4th
Gospel 11:23-26)
Eternal Life Abiding in You
I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and
believes him who sent me has eternal life and
will not be condemned; he has crossed over from
death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is
coming and has now come when the dead will
hear the voice of the Son of Elohim and those
who hear will live (4th Gospel 5:24-25)
When Will the Dead Be Awakened?
…at that time your people - everyone whose
name is found written in the book - will be
delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of
the earth will awake: some to everlasting life...
(Daniel 12:1-2).
Paul Also Tells Us When
Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but
we will all be changed-- in a flash, in the twinkling of
an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will
sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we
will be changed…. (51-52)
When the perishable has been clothed with the
imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then
the saying that is written will come true: "Death has
been swallowed up in victory" (1 Corinthians 15:54).
Hard to Understand Passages
At Home With the Lord
2 Corinthians 5:1-10
Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is
destroyed, we have a building from Elohim, an
eternal house in heaven, not built by human
hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be
clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because
when we are clothed, we will not be found
naked.
For while we are in this tent, we groan and are
burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed
but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so
that what is mortal may be swallowed up by
life. Now it is Elohim who has made us for this very
purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit,
guaranteeing what is to come. Therefore we are
always confident and know that as long as we are at
home in the body we are away from the Master. We
live by faith, not by sight.
We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be
away from the body and at home with the
Master. So we make it our goal to please him,
whether we are at home in the body or away
from it. For we must all appear before the
judgment seat of Messiah, that each one may
receive what is due him for the things done
while in the body, whether good or bad. (2
Corinthians 5:1-10)
Keys to Understanding 2 Cor 5:1-10
Two Resurrection Metaphors:
Paul’s use of “being clothed”
The Mortal being “swallowed up”
Clues about “when”:
“the judgment to come” and “the
judgment seat of Messiah”
To Depart and Be with Messiah
Philippians 1:20-26
I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way
be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage
so that now as always Messiah will be exalted
in my body, whether by life or by death. For
to me, to live is Messiah and to die is gain.
Key to Understanding Philippians 3
The metaphor using “ashamed”
I will in no way be ashamed
But at that time your people-- everyone whose
name is found written in the book-- will be
delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust
of the earth will awake: some to everlasting
life, others to shame and everlasting
contempt. (Daniel 12:1-3)
Ashamed of Yeshua?
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words, the
Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he
comes in his glory and in the glory of the
Father and of the holy angels" (Luke 9:26).
and now, dear children, continue in him, so that
when he appears we may be confident and
unashamed before him at his coming" (1 John
2:28).
If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean
fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I
do not know! I am torn between the two: I
desire to depart and be with Messiah, which is
better by far; but it is more necessary for you
that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I
know that I will remain, and I will continue with
all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
so that through my being with you again your
joy in Messiah Yahusha will overflow on account
of me. (Philippians 1:20-26)
The Transfiguration Event
Doesn’t this prove that Moses and Elijah are
alive in heaven?
And he said to them, "I tell you the truth, some
who are standing here will not taste death before
they see the kingdom of Elohim come with
power." After six days Yahusha took Kepha,
Ya'acov and Yochanan with him and led them up
a high mountain, where they were all alone.
There he was transfigured before them. His clothes
became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world
could bleach them. And there appeared before them
Eliyahu and Mosheh, who were talking with
Yahusha. Kepha said to Yahusha, "Rabbi, it is good for us
to be here. Let us put up three shelters-- one for you, one
for Mosheh and one for Eliyahu." (He did not know what
to say, they were so frightened.) Then a cloud appeared
and enveloped them, and a voice came from the cloud:
"This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!" Suddenly,
when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone
with them except Yahusha. (Mark 9:1-8)
Keys to Understanding the
Transfiguration
Use of language of visions
They would “see” the kingdom of heaven
There “appeared” unto them…
The Thief on the Cross
One of the criminals who hung there
hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the
Messiah? Save yourself and us!" But the
other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you
fear Elohim," he said, "since you are
under the same sentence?
We are punished justly, for we are getting
what our deeds deserve. But this man has
done nothing wrong." Then he said,
"Yahusha, remember me when you come into
your kingdom." Yahusha answered him, "I tell
you the truth, today you will be with me in
paradise." (Luke 23:39-43)
the Friberg Lexicon says
para, deisoj, ou, o` from Old Persian
word for garden; park, paradise; (1) in the Old
Testament the Garden of Eden and the Garden
of God;
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit
says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes, I
will give the right to eat from the tree of life,
which is in the paradise of Elohim. (Revelation
Keys to Understanding the Promise to the
Thief on the Cross
When the thief wakes up, it will be at the time
of Yeshua’s kingdom (paradise)
Paradise is the Greek equivalent to the
Garden of Eden.
Will Elohim send all unbelievers to an
Everlasting, Burning, Torturous Hell?
The Christian doctrine of a never ending
conscious existence in a torturing fiery hell is
the most insidious and despicable teaching
about the Creator of heaven and earth ever
hatched in the human mind.
If God really did send anyone to a never-ending
conscious state of enduring horrific burning
torture, then he would be incalculably more
cruel and hostile than any human being that
ever lived.
This wicked doctrine came from the worst
period in Catholic Church history. It is a
teaching concocted by the severely corrupted
Roman Church in order to scare the populace
into conformity and obedience to the Papal
authority. Martin Luther even stated that he
could not support the doctrine of the
immortality of the soul, which he called one of
the "endless monstrosities in the Roman
dunghill of decretals"
Does Yeshua Teach that Unbelievers Go to a
Fiery Hell?
This is how it will be at the end of the age. The
angels will come and separate the wicked from
the righteous and throw them into the fiery
furnace, where there will be weeping and
gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 13:49-50)
Ummmm
If your hand or your foot causes you to sin cut it
off and throw it away. It is better for you to
enter life maimed or crippled than to have two
hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal
fire. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it
out and throw it away. It is better for you to
enter life with one eye than to have two eyes
and be thrown into the fire of hell. (Matthew
18:8-9)
Hold On…
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for
you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go
into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your
foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to
enter life crippled than to have two feet and be
thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to sin,
pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom
of Elohim with one eye than to have two eyes and be
thrown into hell, where 'their worm does not die, and
the fire is not quenched.' (Mark 9:43-48)
Context, Context, Context
Everyone who heard Yahusha's words were familiar with
Jerusalem and its topography. Surrounding the city of
Jerusalem were two valleys, one of which was called the
Valley of Hinnom. It was in that valley, historically, that
many Israelites sacrificed their children to Molech by
burning them in the fire.
Even after the practice of child sacrifice in the Valley of
Hinnom ended, this same valley became the place
where the dead bodies of criminals and animals were
thrown. It was the garbage dump for the city. It was
always on fire and was infested with the maggots which
eat away at dead and rotting flesh, or any garbage.
But Wait… There’s More
As the new heavens and the new earth that I make
will endure before me," declares Yahuwah, "so
will your name and descendants endure. From
one New Moon to another and from one
Sabbath to another, all mankind will come and
bow down before me," says Yahuwah. "And
they will go out and look upon the dead bodies
of those who rebelled against me; their worm
will not die, nor will their fire be quenched, and
they will be loathsome to all mankind." (Isaiah
66:22-24)
Perishing in the Lake of Fire
This Gehenna is where the bodies of Yeshua’s
enemies will be thrown and all who exit
Yerushalayim to worship our Father will see
the remains of the dead bodies.
Gehenna is the precursor for the Lake of Fire
where all unbelievers will be thrown where
they will perish and for their final
destruction.
What About the Rich Man and Lazarus?
Luke 16
Why did Yeshua relate this story?
No one has ever gone into heaven except the
one who came from heaven-- the Son of Man.
(4th Gospel [John] 3:13)
What About Saul and the Witch of Endor?
1 Samuel 28
She said, “I see a spirit coming up out of the
ground”
Was is really Samuel or was it a spirit
impersonating Samuel?
“Samuel came up”
What About the Souls Under the Alter?
Revelation 6 – the fifth seal, they say, “how long….”
But, Rev 20:4 And I saw the souls of those who had
been beheaded because of their testimony for
Yahusha and because of the word of Elohim. They
had not worshiped the beast or his image and
had not received his mark on their foreheads or
their hands. They came to life and reigned with
Messiah a thousand years.
Christian Funerals
They like to call them "home going" celebrations, or
some other like expression, because they believe
that their dead loved one has “gone home to be
with Jesus.” He’s “in a better place.” The
preacher waxes eloquent on what he imagines it
is like for that soul as he or she has finally met
Jesus face to face and is rejoicing and celebrating
this blissful outcome.
I only hope that people will one day realize that
death is not a reason to celebrate. And a funeral
is not a happy occasion. Death is ugly. People
that die are really altogether dead, and they
aren't coming back. And they aren't in a better
place - unless you think returning to dust as a
better place than living.
Funerals are a proper place of weeping and
mourning because somebody has really died and
is gone. He's not in heaven. He's not in that fiery
hell. He is altogether gone and is no more.
As Paul puts it, "we do not want you to be
ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to
grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope"
(1 Thessalonians 4:13).
Therefore encourage each other with these
words. (1 Thessalonians 4:18)
The Resurrection is our hope. This is the focus
of a proper burial service.
