General Lab Safety Procedures
 Read procedures before doing lab. Ask questions if
you do not understand any part of the procedures.
 Begin lab/activity after receiving permission from
your teacher.
 Collect all materials before lab and bring them to
your work area. Put all materials back at end of
lab.
 Use safety goggles if using potentially hazardous
chemicals or there are potential projectiles.
 Keep your work area uncluttered and your personal
effects out of the way (jewelry, hair, clothing).
 If cutting anything, do it on a flat, stable surface.

Animals
 Never approach wildlife
 Do not touch or handle any animal that is capable of biting,
scratching or otherwise causing harm
 Do not kill, hurt or tease any insects or other wildlife
Plants
 Do not touch or handle any plant that may be harmful
without wearing protective gloves/clothing. Check with your
teacher before touching any unknown plant.
 Do not remove any plant species from its native habitat
(except for non-indigenous species when instructed).
General
 Only touch/handle plants and animals as instructed by your
teacher.
 Wash your hands after touching/handling plants or animals.

Microscope Safety Procedures
 Make sure the electric cord for your microscope is
not crossing any walkway.
 Handle glass slides with care so they do not break.
If it does break, notify your teacher right away.

Accident Reporting
 If any potentially dangerous substance spills, notify
your teacher right away and do not try to clean it
up.
 If any non-potentially dangerous substance spills,
alert your teacher and then clean it up to prevent
slipping/other accidents.
 If there is any glass that is cracked or broken,
report it to your teacher before using it.
 If anyone is hurt or injured, report it immediately to
your teacher. If action is required, follow your
teacher’s instructions quickly and carefully.
