Class Notes 2 The Scientific Method I. The Scientific Method -an organized set of procedures that help scientists answer questions and solve problems. II. The steps of the scientific method A. State the problem - Science is a way of answering questions, so you must have a problem to solve B. Make observations -Gather as much information as you can about your question from observation or research. C: Form a Hypothesis -a possible answer to your question; a testable inference based on your observations D. Test the hypothesis - By doing an experiment E: Collect the data 1. 2. 3. Record the raw results. Do not interpret what they mean. Be detailed! A table is a good idea. Day 1 2 3 size 1 cm 2cm 2cm F. Analyze the data 1. 2. What does the data mean? Interpret your data in the analysis. G. Draw a Conclusion -decide whether to accept or reject the hypothesis, based on the data. III. Scientific Theory When a hypothesis has been supported many times it become a theory B. Scientific theory is NOT an opinion because it is supported by evidence. Ex: cell theory A. Summary List the steps of the scientific method. Why are scientific theories taught in school?
