SCIENTIFIC METHOD
Purpose or Problem
Always worded as a question!
“How
can we…?”
“Why does…?”
What does the scientist want to learn about?
Research
Gather information and research to help
understand the topic.
Research sources: internet, books, journals,
magazines, interviews, etc.
You must evaluate the reliability of your
source.
Hypothesis
“If,…, then….
A possible explanation or answer to a question
that can be tested.
Written as an “If, Then” statement
Ex: If a plant is watered, then the plant will
grow.
Procedure/Method
(test your hypothesis)
Design and perform tests of models (experiments)
identifying scientific variables.
Independent/manipulated (the thing you purposely
manipulate or change.)
dependent/responding ( It is what you are observing and
measuring.)
controlled variable (they do not change, constant)
Analysis, Data and Observations
Make tables or charts to record observed
information.
Make a graphs using data information.
Analyze and interpret data. Make connections and
identifies patterns.
Conclusion
Determine if hypothesis was or was not supported.
Explain why.
Identify new questions from results.
