Art History 10110010 Bill MacKenty, M.Ed. www.mackenty.org Strengthen Deepen Broaden We’ve invested in technology, how is helping our bottom line? It really depends... • The effective integration of technology depends on meeting the learning objectives of the lesson • The level of technology integration often mirrors the level of understanding we are aiming for (Blooms Taxonomy of learning). • Access to resources, relationship of the teacher to the technology, assessment tools, time, in-class support, student relationship to technology, discipline issues, teacher pedagogy, etc... Examples http://bb.hunter.cuny.edu/, flickr, blog, slideshow annotated slide show, edited picture During Instruction Low level integration TEACHER STUDENTS Powerpoint with images, video, sound, effective use of transitions Collaborative note-taking software IM’ing? Podcast the lecture Using multimedia as an instructional tool Googler / post links to classroom website During Instruction High level integration TEACHER Facilitating a digital movie or narrated slideshow related to learning objectives Building a flickr library Using image manipulation software to radically alter existing portraits to another theme STUDENTS Creating multimedia content linked to learning objectives Showcasing, sharing, creating a record of their learning Applying knowledge of content to create novel products “Guide from the side” vs “Sage on the stage” After Instruction Low level integration TEACHER STUDENTS Upload / share lecture notes Download teacher notes and review Post homework assignments Fetch and finish homework. Perhaps post it online. Online quiz or test Online quiz or test After Instruction High level integration TEACHER Facilitate online discussion - answer online questions connect with “community of practice” Linking / posting different multimedia projects STUDENTS Extend and enhance learning after class; clarify complex ideas. Continue learning Critiquing, selfreflection, peer review and peer assessment Explain how you would initiate and develop a collaborative working relationship with the teacher encourage & engage Invite & Inspire Support Bill’s Rule of Technical Support The better your technical support, the better chance your integration efforts will be successful. Discuss the underlying educational principles that might influence your design plan for the instructional materials and/or activities. • Education drives technology • Learning objectives define instructional methodology • A different way of guiding the student towards knowledge How you would present your ideas to the teacher? • Face to face • Small group meetings • Peer instruction • Every few weeks a departmental “what’s new with technology meeting” Navigate and negotiate through fear Questions? I’m curious... • Institutional history integrating technology: successes and challenges • Indicators for success? • What is support like? • What does technology deployment look like? • Security? • Access?
