Acts 2:22-36 (NIV)
Peter’s Sermon
When the people heard this, they were cut to
the heart and said to Peter and the other
apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

Hearing
When the people heard this, they were cut to
the heart and said to Peter and the other
apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

They all ‘heard’
Only one was convicted
This is why I speak to them in parables:
“Though seeing, they do not see; though
hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14 In
them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
“ ‘You will be ever hearing but never
understanding; you will be ever seeing but
never perceiving. 15 For this people’s heart
has become calloused; they hardly hear with
their ears, and they have closed their eyes.

“A sinner can no more repent and
believe without the Holy Spirit's aid
than he can create a world.”
Charles Spurgeon

Conviction
When the people heard this, they were cut to
the heart and said to Peter and the other
apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel;
instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to
teach, not resentful. 25 Those who oppose him
he must gently instruct, in the hope that God
will grant them repentance leading them to a
knowledge of the truth, 26 and that they will
come to their senses and escape from the
trap of the devil, who has taken them captive
to do his will.
24
Come near to God and he will come near to
you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and
purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9
Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter
to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble
yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift
you up.

Acts 2:38-41 (NIV)
Peter’s Response
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ
for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will
receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The
promise is for you and your children and for
all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our
God will call.” 40 With many other words he
warned them; and he pleaded with them,
“Save yourselves from this corrupt
generation.” 41 Those who accepted his
message were baptized, and about three
thousand were added to their number that
day.

Repent – ‘Metanoe’
“To change one’s mind on something”
Repentance Involves…
- Acknowledging your sins with deep regret
and remorse
- Acknowledging your need for forgiveness
and Jesus Christ’s sacrifice to pay the
penalty for those sins
- Asking for forgiveness for those sins
- Moving forward through the power of the
Holy Spirit and daily making the conscious
decision to not continue in a sinful lifestyle

They devoted themselves to the apostles’
teaching and to the fellowship, to the
breaking of bread and to prayer.
“To do so no more is the truest
repentance.”
Martin Luther
For the kind of sorrow God wants us to
experience leads us away from sin and
results in salvation. There’s no regret for that
kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which
lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.
11 Just see what this godly sorrow produced
in you! Such earnestness, such concern to
clear yourselves, such indignation, such
alarm, such longing to see me, such zeal, and
such a readiness to punish wrong.

“So then, King Agrippa, I was not
disobedient to the vision from heaven. 20
First to those in Damascus, then to those in
Jerusalem and in all Judea, and to the
Gentiles also, I preached that they should
repent and turn to God and prove their
repentance by their deeds.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive
ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just and
will forgive us our sins and purify us from
all unrighteousness.
