using the past to find the future
Five challenges for libraries to address:





“critical mass
aggregation
local collection development
integration
archives”
Five areas to take action in (UKOLN):





“distributed discovery location and request
development of metadata
coordination of national resource discovery
integrated access to resources across domains
organisation of distributed library resources”

print is not forgotten
 by building on the
strengths of existing
systems
 by providing
integrated access to
print and electronic
sources of
information through
existing systems
 by providing easy
to use access
pathways for the
end-user

Australian library engagement
in the national learning environment:

the Australian Academic Research Library Network
(AARLIN),

the Collaborative Online Learning and Information
Services (COLIS) Consortium,

a new resource discovery service,
and in associated projects:

the Western Australian Libraries Authentication
Project (WALAP),

the Schools Online Content Curriculum Initiative
(SOCCI)

talking the same talk

…26-27 June 2002
walking the same walk
Early findings from the pilot phase:

Z39.50, distributed searching

130 commercial databases chosen, 40 implemented

UNIX skills required by university staff, collaboration
facilitated this
Reactions from academics:

not interested in Web sites selected by libraries or
described in catalogues

keen on multi-database searches, e-journals

assumed could access resources not held/subscribed to
by the university

beware the ‘portal’ label
"I think we're more
interested in not
going it alone."
“The results were not
blazingly fast, a fact
that annoyed some
students”
“.. plans to become
more involved in
academic
collaborations such
as the universitysponsored Open
Knowledge
Initiative..”

dancing to the same tune
“identify and map interoperability issues for learning space applications
identify appropriate standards for interoperability
provide input to IMS and other standards bodies to fill interoperability gaps
provide input into the OKI framework”

shining a light
the pilot resource discovery service is:
 making free, significant resources more visible in the public
domain
 enhancing awareness and use of the intellectual output of
a nation by disclosing it to a broad community, to
facilitate learning, teaching and research
 engendering an interest in underutilised resources
 flagging resources ‘at risk’
 identifying and supporting service providers of the future

is it all about libraries ?
 “libraries often do not present a clear vision to those
responsible for library funding
 the public does not see the library as part of the service they
receive, but those responsible for funding need to be aware of
the library’s role
 libraries need to find a way to be more closely aligned with
political and economic agendas
 it is difficult for government agencies to get approval for plans
which do not show a tangible economic benefit
 it is essential that the library sector present a single voice to get
funding for significant infrastructure development
 there is value in trying to move the focus from strictly
economic issues, although social and cultural value is not
necessarily measurable in dollar terms”

are we there yet ?
“incremental change is no longer enough..
transformational change is needed to
secure sustainability..”
