Welcome to the Shadow! The
Colony has spoken and portals are
the newest, hippest way to manage
your campus experience. With tools
to help you navigate the UE system,
connect with others and stay on top
of your academic commitments, the
Shadow is the UE’s newly redesigned website that is more than
just a webpage. Respectful of our
deep campus respect for everything
Prairie Dog, the Shadow committee
has created a customizable webpage
(also known as a portal) that has
links to everything from the Burrow
to Foraging. It is our hope, that with
continued input from beta testers
such as yourself, we can truly create
a portal that is your own personal
shadow.
Currently, Shadow can help you with
everything from assignment tutorials
to date reminders. You can easily
sync all of your personalized devices
(like your PDA or iPod) to Shadow
and once you complete the quick
survey, Shadow can be personalized
to deliver the information that is
important to you!
Aside from
personalizing your Shadow, data from
the survey will be further used to help
us determine what types of services
and links are useful, and which are
not.

experience by clicking on

“An institutional information portal is the framework for delivery of a consolidated,
individualized presentation of the campus Web. Portals facilitate personalization and
build community, which provides improved levels of customer service.”

Why Residence Life?
Why The Black Student Union?
“To have maximum positive benefit,
the community should encourage
regular
interactions
between
students, offer opportunities for
collaboration, be small enough so
that no one feels superfluous,
include people from diverse
background, and serve as a
reference group.” Chickering &
Reisser, 1993
“The issue of ethnic identity is
important to the development of a
positive self-concept for minority
adolescents” Phinney, J. 1990
Why Gay-Straight Alliance?
“Individuals who acknowledged that
they are probably gay or lesbian
seek out other gay and lesbian
people to reduce their feelings of
isolation” D’Augelli, A. R. 1992.
Why TheFaceBook.Com?
“I think that the recognition of
TheFaceBook.com as a usable
tool by the university might
dissuade some of the negative
aspects of the website. Currently
seen as “hip”, incorporation of
TheFaceBook.com by university
faculty/staff members might let
students
see
faculty/staff
members in a new light.” Colleen
Schmidt, Residence Hall Director,
University of Colorado-Boulder

Theory related to Shadow
Making Life Easier
“Way finding, sometimes referred to as spatial orientation, involves using
past experience and immediate cues from the physical environment to
plan and carry out movement in the environment” (Strange & Banning).
By providing you with a portal similar to various other university portals in
style and content you can easily maneuver and link to the resources you
need.
Student Involvement Goes Virtual
“The theory of student involvement encourages educators to focus less
on what they do and more on what the student does: how motivated the
student is and how much energy the student devotes to the learning
process” (Astin).
We know that college life would not be the same with out instant
messaging, mp3s, facebook, and all the other things you need to stay
involved and clued into what’s happening on campus. That is why we
have it all right here for you!

theory to the left, please

So who is on our list of colony
members who lent a hand in figuring
out what to include in this site? We’ve
looked all around the plains and were
fortunate enough to have the
participation of the Director of
Residence Life, a Rep. from the
Communications Office, the Faculty
Senate President, the Student Activities
Director, and faculty members from the
English Department. However, student
involvement has been paramount with
additional support from your Student
Government Rep, RHA Rep, Brandon
(a student we just picked up), and
Information Technology.

Why did we pick up the people we
did on the Committee? Well, we
recognized that certain members have
certain niches!
Let’s take for example the Director of
Residence life. It’s a challenging
position, but because of it “Residence
life staff have emerged as essential
collaborators
in
development
of
community and engaging students in the
learning process” (Holley, B. & Mueller,
J. 1990)
What about those faculty members
helping out? It might seem weird, but
we’re doing it for you! Simply put,
“Research has shown that contact with
faculty members outside the classroom
has benefits for students” (Golde, C. &
Prbbenow, D 2000)
